Missed Warren Miller’s Playground?

It looks like you're new here, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

If you missed the Utah premier of Warren Miller’s film Playground there is still time. In fact, most location weren’t as lucky as Utah to get an early showing. But it’s a double edged sword - now the wait for the season to start is unbearable. It was a roaring crowd at Abravanel Hall, especially when the Utah segment came on, and we expect you’ll be roaring it up as you open your season with Warren.

Okay, okay, so Warren himself is retired and the film, although it carries his name is not the same as his films of yester-year. Chances are its bigger, better and more action packed. After all, it’s still ski and snowboard action at its finest.

No matter how bad a winter is Warren Miller Films seems to find deep untracked powder nearly everywhere they go. Just like they did here in Utah last season. How was it that they would come to Utah the last week of February when it dumped nearly 4′ of snow? I wish they’d come every week to Utah if that’s the type of welcome they get.

Enjoy the trailer and be sure to find a showing near you. Then get out to Utah this winter to see just how deep it really is when it dumps.

Triple F - Fat Flake Festival

Fat flake festival

You know it’s gonna be a good one when the snow starts coming in fat and furious. How many times have you been in the middle of a huge fat flake storm and instinctively, like a child, stuck out your tounge to catch a few of the monsters? Yea, I too have been there.

In hope of many fat flake storms to come this winter Ski Utah is stoked to be putting on the Fat Flake Festival coming up on November 3. Yes, this Saturday to be exact.

Aside from a good old fashioned sacrificial bonfire filled with straight skis and towering flames, the Fat Flake Festival is surely the next best thing. Since the festival is being held at the Gallivan Center in downtown Salt Lake City I doubt there will be any bonfires but there will be plenty of action.

To kick off the event at 4:30 don’t miss the MONSTER (Energy Drink) RAIL JAM with top altheltes from all over Utah and beyond. From 5-10 there will be ski and snowboard films showing, athlete signings, beer garden and an 80s ski-outfit contest. In fact, everyone is encouraged to don their 80’s one piece, stretch pants, steep tech jackets and those flourescent Smith goggles and party all night.

Some of the athletes that will be hanging out signing posters will be Sage Cattabriga-Alosa, Jeremy Nobis, Grete Eliassen, Eric Leines, Bjorn Leines, Marc Frank Montoya to name a few.

Don’t miss it - rain, shine or SNOW the party is a go.

Check out the Fat Flake Festival page on the Ski Utah site for all the details.

I Ride Park City

Why does Park City Mountain Resort have to do stuff like this? Putting out a teaser for a film that I can’t see until 2008? It’s not right…it’s painfully wrong.

But I really like the idea of an entire film being shot within the resort. Park City Mountain Resort has been tops in the reader polls of Snowboarder, Transworld and Freeskier Magazines for their terrain parks and the Superpipe. The resort as a whole has always faired well in the Ski and Skiing polls too. Bottom line is Park City Mountain Resort has a lot to offer no matter how you slide on snow.

With athletes like Shaun White, Mark Frank, Erin Comstock and others this video is going on my radar…12 months out.

The Snow Is Falling…

When are you going to be skiing?

With each new storm, we are getting closer and closer to each resort opening for the season. Below, we have each resorts scheduled opening date. Updates will be posted as time grows nearer.

I am really pumped about these early open dates. A little bit of experience tells me that Snowbird will probably be the best bet for opening weekend. Where are you planning your first day in the snow? Sound off in the comments!

Winter is Near

Last night I awoke at 2am and couldn’t get back to sleep. The entire time I was thinking about skiing, wondering what lines I was going to ski this coming season, pondering what the snow will be like (Please Ullr, let there be snow) and thinking about what gear I’m going to “need” to pick up.

Weather it’s while asleep at night or day-dreaming while putting in your time for the man, I’m sure winter’s proximity has been on most everyone’s mind.

After awaking this morning I pondered my restless night. I started thinking about what signs signal to me that instead of being a distant memory winter is now an anticipated arrival. Here is a short list of the signs that tell me that shortly I’ll be rolling out the red carpet welcoming Winter.

  1. Fall colors - I first noticed some of the under brush changing hues a few weeks ago but as I was rock climbing last week in Little Cottonwood Canyon the reds and oranges of the scrub oak was a telling sign that summer’s grasp is loosening.
  2. Teasers - All of my favorite ski film companies start to pump out the ski porn. There are too many to point out but a couple of my favorite teasers so far this season are PNW from Theory3 and The Sublimation Experiment from KGB Productions . Check out Teaser Season at PowderMag.com for a full run down.
  3. Powder Magazine - Despite magazines like Coulior (RIP), Freeskier, Skiing, Ski and Backcountry it’s the arrival of the first issue of Powder Magazine and the subsequent cover-to-cover reading of it that surely signals to the brain “let the dreaming begin”
  4. Frost - Although the upper peaks in Colorado and even the tips of the Wasatch have seen the first flakes of white, for me the first frost on the car windows are a sign. This morning I woke to frosted on my car. Fumbling to find the defrost button on the console, I heard the familiar “scrape” sound of the wipers skimming across the frosted windows in a vain attempt to avoid pulling out the window scraper.

What signals to you that winter will soon be here? What signs of winter’s arrival resonate with you? Click the comments link in the upper right of this post and let me know.

Enjoy this teaser by Theory 3….(they should do a Utah film next year)
