I'll admit, as much as I'll be ready for ski season to be here when it finally arrives (and it always does), I'm currently enjoying the sunny October weather to get in the last singletrack mountain bike rides of the year and make some serious ski season preparations, like getting my Powder Playlist put together. I also have to admit that I don't listen to a whole lot of "new" music. So I tend to get caught in a rut, or a groove. Depending on how you look at it.
My definition of new music are albums from old bands that I missed in my youth (like Heaven and Hell by Black Sabbath), or new bands made up of old artists (might I suggest Chickenfoot with Sammy Hagar, Joe Satriani and Michael Anthony). Spotify has helped expose me to some tracks I wouldn't normally ever stumble upon, take for example a band called Frightened Rabbit (saw them on Grizzly Adam's playlist).
Here's where you come in: I've listed the first 9 songs of my GSOE 2011 playlist. That's Greatest Snow On Earth®, but you knew that. Help me fill it up, and tell me what you are listening to? I can't promise I'll abandon my metal tendencies, but I'll at least give what you add here in the comments an honest listen.
1.Watch This by Slash (featuring Dave Grohl and Duff McKagan)
2. Couer d'Alene by Alter Bridge (epic guitar work by Mark Tremonti)
3. 2,000 Man by Kiss (yeah, it's a remake of The Rolling Stones)
4. Groove Machine by King's X (best band you've never listened to)
5. Still of the Night (Live) by John Sykes (better than the album version, IMHO)
6. Better Off by Foo Fighters (Dave Grohl's 2nd appearance on this list)
7. Up Next by Chickenfoot (No Van Hagar jokes until you listen to it)
8. Not Miserable by Frightened Rabbit (might be an odd fit, but I like it)
9. Neon Knights by Black Sabbath (I'm revisiting the Ronnie James Dio years)

I am old enough to rememebr the originals but always looking for some good tunes to rock me down the head wall. Add Mountain Man by Crash Kings to the list - good rock vocals and guitars but not an old song.

I use this website called rcrdlbl to get downloads emailed to me. Found some great tunes that way.
Check out Titus Andronicus.
I also love Beta Band and Cold War Kids when I'm out cruising powder!

Checking out Black Tide on Spotify! Thanks for the reco. I also need to add at least 2 songs from the new Mastodon (The Hunter) album. Check out "Octopus Has No Friends."

Try the band Black Tide, particularly their album, "Warriors of Time". I came upon them through a ski movie a few yaers ago, MSP I think.

Shonnarchy, if you put Kiss DYNASTY in the perspective that it was competing with disco for airtime, it's a pretty heavy album. Or, I should say it was a pretty heavy 8-track. Is that still considered an album?

I *love* KISS, but I'm not sure that I can get behind anything off the DYNASTY album. It's an exceptionally tough listen.
To add to your of Dave Grohl songs, might I suggest almost anything off the PROBOT album? "Shake Your Blood" featuring Lemmy from Motorhead is pretty approachable. Absolutely no new ground is covered in the album, but it's great to hear old metalheads growl.
In more recent (but still not exactly new) territory, I still can't get enough of Big Business or the The Melvins "A Senile Animal" album where Jared and Coady of Big Business join Buzzo and Dale.
I know what you mean by really getting into the oldies, though. I spent all of last winter listening to Van Halen I and the first half of the ZZ Top catalog.
