weekend I skied in the 3rd Annual Picabo Street Ski Challenge. The goal
of the event is to raise money for the National Children’s Alliance.
“National Children’s Alliance is a nationwide not-for-profit membership
organization whose mission is to promote and support communities in
providing a coordinated investigation and comprehensive response to
victims of severe child abuse. NCA accredited members are Children’s
The event kicked off on Saturday Night at Hotel Park City. We had a couple of drinks at the bar with 1998 Olympic Gold Medal Aerialist Nikki Stone and her husband Michael Spencer, an athlete manager (see photo below) before hitting the buffet and getting our grub on.
Then we listened to some very emotional speeches from child abuse
victims. They bravely shared their tragic stories, which were tough to
hear. These three individuals went through more than you can possibly
imagine during their childhoods and now serve as inspirations to other
young victims. The great cause supported by the event and the
opportunity I had to participate became crystal clear to me after that.
Together we can make a difference to help these people. “Alone we can
do so little. Together we can do so much,” Helen Keller once said.
After the speeches the mood lightened up with some music and silent and
live auctions. Sponsors donated several items and services, which were
auctioned to raise money for the NCA.
On Sunday it was time for some skiing. Athletes (including former Olympians and Park City locals Heidi Voelker, Picabo Street and Nikki Stone) and Hollywood types (Billy Bush from “Access Hollywood” and Kate Walsh from “Grey’s Anatomy”) were put into teams and raced the dual GS course at Park City Mountain Resort. Here's a photo of Picabo Street and Billy Bush conducting T.V. interviews at the bottom of the course.
After the first run, the competitive nature came out. People, including myself, were shedding layers to get more aerodynamic. At the end of the day Team Rollo walked away with the W. Then it was time for the lunch buffet, live music and another live auction. The winning teams were awarded and celebrated with their huge bottles of Korbel during the après ski party. To help with this important cause, visit www.nca-online.org to donate your time or money.
