Living in the Past

It looks like you're new here, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I found this on Snowbird’s YouTube channel and figured in anticipation of Brighton opening this Wednesday and Solitude this coming Friday that the past is a good place to visit today.

For those that were at Snowbird on opening day, this should bring back some memories.

Did I mention it is snowing again?

Snowbird Day 2:Recap

Well, another notch on the ski pole, Snowbird day 2 in the books. Started out the day on the tram, posting a few pics from my cell phone. After breaking in my legs to idea of skiing, (Sure, I could have done some pre-season training, but I thought that sitting at my computer trying to become the greatest blogger of all time took precedence), loosening up the boots a little, I settled into a bluebird day of skiing. I took my camera around and took some pictures of the day. Hope you like.

Snowbird, Day 2

Snowbird opened yesterday to thousand of smiling faces, today even more people headed up the canyon for the early season snow.

This post is coming from my iPhone, on the mountain. Love the 3G at 11,000 feet. More pics to come….

Snowbird Announces 2nd Earliest Opening Ever - This FRIDAY!!!!

SNOWBIRD, UTAH – Continuing the tradition of offering the longest ski season in Utah, Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort will open Friday, Nov. 7. This year’s opening marks the second earliest start to a season in the resort’s 38-year history.

“This storm and the subsequent lake effect have provided a timely blanket of snow in Little Cottonwood Canyon,” said Snowbird President Bob Bonar. “Skiing early season powder is a great way to kick off the season.”

Snowbird will be offering the Aerial Tram and two lifts, Gadzoom and Mid-Gad, to skiers and riders beginning Friday at 9 a.m. Expected open terrain includes Regulator Johnson from the top of Hidden Peak, as well as Big Emma and Bassackwards. Additional lifts and terrain will open as conditions permit. The Snowbird Center and Creekside Lodge will be offering multiple food, merchandise and equipment rental options throughout the weekend.

More than 3 feet of snow has fallen in November, and cold temperatures have allowed snow guns to operate, adding to the already impressive early season snow totals. Last year, Snowbird received 611 inches of The Greatest Snow on Earth® and had a 183-day season with skiing and riding from Nov. 30 to June 22.

Snowbird is offering an early season ticket price of $62 and chair passes will be honored to access the Tram until additional terrain opens. Early season lodging packages are currently available starting at $99/night through much of December.

Post Election Coverage: Obama and McCain Hold Private Summit at Snowbird

One man wins, the other loses.  But why live in the past when the present is SO much more enjoyable?

Following a lengthy and often heated presidential campaign, Obama and Mcain caught late night flights to meet up at Snowbird for a little R&R and to do as McCain vowed “we must move beyond it and work together to get our country moving again.”

He didn’t mention that the first step of moving beyond it was a little self indulgence in Utah’s world famous powder given that Snowbird received well over 18″ of snow!

Ski Utah photographer Chris Pearson fought off the paparazzi to get these exclusive photos.  I think Obama’s form is a little better. You decide.

Who says Obama isn’t patriotic?  Check out those red, white and blue gloves!

Why does Utah have the greatest snow on Earth?

Gas Up at Phillips - 2 for 1 Snowbird Tickets

Coming down Parleys into Salt Lake I noticed I was running on fumes.  So I exited on Parley’s Way (2100 South) and pulled into the first gas station I saw which was a Phillips 66.

While filling up I saw this sign:

Here’s the deal:

  • Fill up 4 times at a Phillips 66 station with a minimum of 8 gallons each time
  • Do so before the deadline of November 30, 2008
  • You must redeem before Christmas day, 2008

Also included in the deal are gear rental deals with SkiNSee, Christy Sports and Canyon Sports.

Snowbird Gets 10″ to Start November

Yesterday in the valley it was raining cats and dogs - coming down hard. All I could think about was how much is it snowing up on the mountain.

When I awoke the Wasatch was white and Snowbird had received 10″ of snow at the top of Hidden Peak with an expectation that with the storm rolling in as I type another 1-2 feet will arrive.

This is today! The Snowbird SnowCam is BACK!!

What a great way to start off November.   With temperatures dropping below freezing, Snowbird will have the snow guns running beginning this evening.

“Over the weekend, Snowbird ushered in winter with an impressive early season storm,” said Snowbird President Bob Bonar. “With more snow on the way this week, everyone is eagerly awaiting opening day and the start of another memorable year in Little Cottonwood.”

The 10 inches of weekend snowfall is the first recorded accumulation for the 2008-09 ski season.

If this storm keeps rolling in and more follow, a check of their early season lodging packages are might be in order as they start at $99/night.

A Note to Locals

The Tram will be open for scenic foot passenger rides from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 8-9. A foot passenger Tram ticket is $12. Lift tickets and season passes will be honored on the Tram but there will be no skiing or riding from the Tram.

Are you in the zone?

Check out this article in the Salt Lake TribuneKristen Ulmer, a Zen instructor, former top extreme skier and member of the U.S. Ski Team’s moguls squad promotes a strategy focusing on the mental aspects of skiing as well as the physical.

Here are some of her tips for getting in the zone physically and mentally.  Click on the link above for more tips.

The physical
1. Strengthen quads by cycling, doing squats and weight training.
2. Strengthen hamstrings with weight machines in the gym. This will counteract the quads and help avoid blowing out a knee when skiing.
3. Mountain bike downhill: This strengthens the legs and quads but also helps improve hand-eye coordination, reaction time and the need to look ahead that is required in skiing.

The mental
1. Breathing: Take three deep breaths with your eyes closed before every run. This will help you shift mentally.
2. Consciousness: Recognize when you are stressed, anxious or feel fear in the moment. By being aware of these emotions, a skier has won half the battle.
3. Practice: It takes mental practice to become a great skier. Attend a spiritual workshop or seminar, meditate about the sport, or write a journal about it.

This ski season, Kristen Ulmer will offer three Ski to Live Clinics, a combination of ski and Zen clinics. She bills them as “a profound and powerful exploration of different levels of consciousness as accessed through the sports of skiing and snowboarding.” They are Jan. 29-Feb. 1 at Snowbird; Feb. 26-March 1 at The Canyons; and April 2-5 at Alta.

Food donation results from Snowbird’s Customer Appreciation Days

Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort donated 6,568 pounds of nonperishable foot to the Utah Food Bank and $1,700 to the Wasatch Adaptive Sports Program after its annual Customer Appreciation Days, in which visitors received a free Tram ride in exchange for a canned good or cash donation.  Thanks for everyone who donated.
