How about a buy-one-get-one-free coupon for the restaurants up at Snowbird?  Sounds good to me.  But hurry, the coupon expires Dec. 18, 2008.

U Students End Semester and Take to the Hills for Ski and Shred Red Day at Snowbird

Powder hungry students, faculty and staff of the University of Utah can partake in the school’s annual celebration on the slopes of the semester’s end, known as “Ski and Shred Red Day”, on Friday, December 12th at Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort. The event is sponsored by Campus Recreation Services.

Participants wear the school’s color - red - and take advantage of the early snow and a great deal. A Tram and chairs lift tickets is specially priced at $38 for Ski and Shred Red Day participants.

Tickets are now on sale at the University’s Outdoor Recreation Program (2140 E. Red Butte Road, Fort Douglas, Building 650), The Union Front Desk, The Field House, 214 E-HPER and the University of Utah Hospital Gift Shop.

The U’s Outdoor Recreation Program also has ski and snowboard equipment available for rent. More information is available at web.utah.edu/campusrec/outdoor_rec/rentals.html. To reserve equipment or ask questions, call the U’s Outdoor Recreation Program at (801) 581-8516.

Why drive up the canyon? Save some $$$ and the environment - take the bus.

The Utah Transit Authority is bumping up its bus service to Salt Lake County ski resorts.

This year, the ski service — which starts Dec. 14 — will include a quicker route from the University of Utah, direct buses to Snowbird and Alta and expanded hours for employee shuttles.

“We’re really doing all we can to get people up the canyon and down the canyon as quickly as [possible] so they don’t have to be in all their gear for long periods of time,” UTA spokeswoman Carrie Bohnsack-Ware said Thursday.

That means U. of U. students will be able to hop on a direct bus, Route 952, to reach canyon shuttles.

“We’re definitely excited about how much easier it will be for students to get to the resorts,” Ski Utah spokeswoman Jessica Kunzer said. “One of our greatest strengths, besides our snow quality, is Utah resorts’ accessibility.”

Canyon buses will be starting farther from the mouths of Little and Big Cottonwood canyons at various park-and-ride lots, such as 2000 East and 9400 South, where there are more spaces. In fact, drivers can see, in real time, how many spaces are available at ski lots, by visiting UTA’s website.

UTA will send more of its Little Cottonwood Canyon buses exclusively to Snowbird or Alta to avoid running return buses that fill up at one resort, leaving no room for tired skiers and boarders at the next stop.

Living in the Past

I found this on Snowbird’s YouTube channel and figured in anticipation of Brighton opening this Wednesday and Solitude this coming Friday that the past is a good place to visit today.

For those that were at Snowbird on opening day, this should bring back some memories.

Did I mention it is snowing again?

Snowbird Day 2:Recap

Well, another notch on the ski pole, Snowbird day 2 in the books. Started out the day on the tram, posting a few pics from my cell phone. After breaking in my legs to idea of skiing, (Sure, I could have done some pre-season training, but I thought that sitting at my computer trying to become the greatest blogger of all time took precedence), loosening up the boots a little, I settled into a bluebird day of skiing. I took my camera around and took some pictures of the day. Hope you like.

Snowbird, Day 2

Snowbird Announces 2nd Earliest Opening Ever - This FRIDAY!!!!

SNOWBIRD, UTAH – Continuing the tradition of offering the longest ski season in Utah, Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort will open Friday, Nov. 7. This year’s opening marks the second earliest start to a season in the resort’s 38-year history.

“This storm and the subsequent lake effect have provided a timely blanket of snow in Little Cottonwood Canyon,” said Snowbird President Bob Bonar. “Skiing early season powder is a great way to kick off the season.”

Snowbird will be offering the Aerial Tram and two lifts, Gadzoom and Mid-Gad, to skiers and riders beginning Friday at 9 a.m. Expected open terrain includes Regulator Johnson from the top of Hidden Peak, as well as Big Emma and Bassackwards. Additional lifts and terrain will open as conditions permit. The Snowbird Center and Creekside Lodge will be offering multiple food, merchandise and equipment rental options throughout the weekend.

More than 3 feet of snow has fallen in November, and cold temperatures have allowed snow guns to operate, adding to the already impressive early season snow totals. Last year, Snowbird received 611 inches of The Greatest Snow on Earth® and had a 183-day season with skiing and riding from Nov. 30 to June 22.

Snowbird is offering an early season ticket price of $62 and chair passes will be honored to access the Tram until additional terrain opens. Early season lodging packages are currently available starting at $99/night through much of December.

Post Election Coverage: Obama and McCain Hold Private Summit at Snowbird

One man wins, the other loses.  But why live in the past when the present is SO much more enjoyable?

Following a lengthy and often heated presidential campaign, Obama and Mcain caught late night flights to meet up at Snowbird for a little R&R and to do as McCain vowed “we must move beyond it and work together to get our country moving again.”

He didn’t mention that the first step of moving beyond it was a little self indulgence in Utah’s world famous powder given that Snowbird received well over 18″ of snow!

Ski Utah photographer Chris Pearson fought off the paparazzi to get these exclusive photos.  I think Obama’s form is a little better. You decide.

Who says Obama isn’t patriotic?  Check out those red, white and blue gloves!

Why does Utah have the greatest snow on Earth?
