Your Ski Day Routine

It looks like you're new here, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

You know, I have a routine, not that complicated, but not that simple either when I go skiing in the morning. I want to encourage some discussion here, so after I share mine, you need to leave a comment, write a blog post, send an email, rocks in the sand, someway, you need to share your story too.

Here is how it starts…
When I am leaving to go skiing in the morning, I pull all of my gear off of the floor heater that it has been sitting on since I went last time. The gear may have been there for one day, sometimes over a week. It gives my house that “I just went skiing” scent that all the ladies love. (Especially my wife.) All of that get tossed in the car and I head up to my favorite quick stop, the 7/11 on Bangerter near I-15.

Now, I have what many doctor describe as a “Rock Star Diet”. This includes drinking at least 150 oz. of Dr. Pepper a day, and following up with mostly fried foods. This diet is what makes me one of the best skiers/bloggers on this side of the Wasatch Front. You may look into this diet in training for the Wasatch Back, St. George Marathon, and the Olympics.

Follow up the Dr. Pepper with a couple Go-Go Taquitos, and I am set.

A little gas in the Ski Buggy, (btw, how many iterations of ski buggy license plates exist here in Utah? My neighbors have three, my cousins one, I see them on the freeway all the time… Blows my proverbial mind.) Gas was only $1.90 when I filled up the other day, some kind of a miracle. This can only really mean one thing too, more skiing.

With all of the gear in my Hybrid Escalade (Read: 93′ Subaru Impreza) It is up to the hills!

What is your routine?

My favorite routine was called the “After-Math” It went like this. Load the skis in the car. Drive to math class at Weber State. Jones for an hour and a half until class was over then take the 20 minute drive to Snowbasin. Of course, on a fresh powder day, I would sacrifice math class. Boy, I miss the discounted college student season pass they offered that year.

I wake up, fire up my computer, check the snow reports, and then curse myself due to the fact that I just remembered that I live in Dallas and not in Utah.

Get midweek Alta season Pass in October, haul and winterize sailboat and declare ski season officially arrived. Work till late November, get in car, drive to Texas and then off to Utah. Arrive SLC late Dec., check in at hotel.

Get up mornings 0530 hrs and head to treadmill, breakfast at 0700 hrs. Requisition peanutbutter, jelly, bread and orange from breakfast buffet for the lunch bucket. Leave for Alta at 0730 hrs. Ski. After skiing, stop at Porcupine. Go back to hotel, repeat for 3 months. In April, return to the northeast, launch sailboat, work and sail thru October and start process over.

Being from Southern California, my ski routine is slightly different. Mine starts before I go to sleep, by checking the surf repoert. Winter is not only for skiing, but also for surfing. Ideally, the day starts with a an hour in the water, then straight to the local Jack in the box. From their its class till 3. Upon getting out its a race to Mt High or Snow Summit, both of which are about an hour away. From tehre is its all about the park (since there’s never any snow) and by 9pm we’re sitting in the car driving through Del Taco.

@JP - I think I want your life. ;-)

Since a lot of my ski days are in the backcountry and I’m leaving the house at 5am or so to start skinning up one of the peaks here in the Wasatch, I have a routine for this which also happens when I head to the resorts:

I get out my trusty pottery bowl that I made in 7th grade which at the time was a mistake cause the top curved inward but now it’s PERFECT for driving and eating at the same time. I fill it with cold cereal and a banana. Along with that goes a tall mug of hot cocoa (Stephen’s Mint Chocoloate) and I’m off, usually playing one of 3 cd’s that I never tire of at 5am - Slightly Stoopid, WyClef or Beck.

By the time I’m at the resort or the trailhead I’m ready to roll.

I’ve got a question for the collective
- do you shower before a day of skiing? OR just roll with the nappy hair and smell knowing you’ll only sweat all day long?

@Kendall;

Someday I’d like to get eductaed on being in the backcountry. I respect you guys and gals, sounds like a blast. This year I’ve already got behind schedule. Got hung up rebuilding the ferry boat (wood hull) I work on and won’t be out of here until mid December (cold weather set in with wind). Hope you all have good skiing and boarding early season. Be there late Dec.
