Discover a New Way to Battle Holiday Bulge and try a Snow Sport: January is National Learn a Snow Sport Month

November 1, 2009

This January will be the second National Learn a Snow Sport Month at alpine resorts, Nordic centers, and state and national parks all across the United States. Last year over 200 resorts in 22 states offered free or discounted ski, snowboard, and cross-country ski or snowshoe lessons. The grassroots initiative, designed to get people active during the winter months, saw over 20,000 participants nationwide this first year.

As America battles an obesity epidemic, the snow sports industry hopes to motivate youth and adults to be active in winter months when exercise is most difficult. Nearly one in ten of the world’s school children are overweight and the number of overweight adolescents in the U.S. has tripled in the past two decades. Overweight conditions in children and adolescents are generally caused by lack of physical activity, unhealthy eating patterns or a combination of the two.

Snow sports are great for the whole family and promote a lifetime of year-round exercise and recreation.

We would be happy to share this great initiative by providing more information or interviews from industry experts.

Specific alpine ski, snowboard, cross-country and snowshoe packages can be found at www.winterfeelsgood.com.

Learn a Snow Sport Month is supported by SnowSports Industries America (SIA), Professional Ski Instructors of America –American Association of Snowboard Instructors (PSIA-AASI), National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) and Cross Country Ski Areas Association (CCSAA).
