Park City Mountain Resort's Ted Ligety Wins Gold, Makes History at Sochi Winter Games

·         PCMR athlete Ted Ligety wins gold medal in Giant Slalom
·         Ligety becomes first American man to win multiple Olympic gold medals in alpine competition
·         PCMR athletes have currently won 3 golds, 1 silver in Sochi – good for 12th in medal standings

Park City, Utah (February 19, 2014) – Park City Mountain Resort’s own Ted Ligety brought home the gold in the men’s Giant Slalom alpine skiing competition at the Sochi Winter Games today, becoming the first American man ever to win multiple alpine Olympic gold medals. Ted’s previous gold was won in the men’s combined event at the 2006 Turin Games.
 
Ligety, an overwhelming favorite in the GS, his strongest event, dominated the race with a 1.5 second lead over the field after the first of two runs before finishing .48 seconds ahead of his closest competitor.
 
Ted has shared a lifelong connection with Park City Mountain Resort, first learning to ski at PCMR as a young child before learning to race there and moving up in the competitive ranks. When home between World Cup events, the Park City native can often be seen skiing PCMR’s slopes on his own time. A video chronicling Ted’s PCMR roots can be seen HERE.
 
Ted joins fellow PCMR-sponsored athletes Sage Kotsenburg (Snowboard Slopestyle) and Joss Christensen (Ski Slopestyle) as gold medal winners in Sochi. Torah Bright (Snowboard Halfpipe), another PCMR athlete and riding for Australia in the Olympics, won a silver medal in these Games.
 
PCMR’s three golds and one silver medal would rank the resort 12th in the official medal standings as of Wednesday morning. Ted returns to competition Saturday in the men’s slalom.
