Snowbird brings Electric Vehicle charging stations online

SNOWBIRD, Utah —Snowbird will flip the switch this week on five Level 2 Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations for year-round use. The stations, along with an additional 110-volt outlet, are available to electric car owners who want to enjoy worry-free travel in beautiful Little Cottonwood Canyon. 

“We’re excited to be able to provide transportation options for our guests and employees above and beyond bus services and our carpool initiatives,” said Hilary Arens, Snowbird’s Director of Sustainability.

The stations will be available for use following a public ribbon-cutting event on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. in the Snowbird Cliff Lodge parking structure via Entry 4, where the chargers are located. Utah Division of Environmental Quality has been invited to speak at the event, along with Snowbird General Manager Dave Fields, U.S. Olympic Snowboarder Alex Diebold Salt Lake County Councilwoman Jenny Wilson, and representatives from Rocky Mountain Power and Utah Leaders for Clean Air. Tesla Motors will have electric vehicles on hand and will offer demonstration rides. Food and drink will be served and prizes given out. 

The chargers were installed with the assistance of grants and donations from Tesla, Rocky Mountain Power and Utah Leaders for Clean Air. Snowbird has been pursuing the requisition and installation of these chargers since 2017 and support Snowbird’s sustainability goals of reducing carbon emissions from vehicles traveling in Little Cottonwood Canyon.

“Snowbird has strived to be a good steward of the land in Little Cottonwood Canyon for more than four decades,” Arens said. “These chargers represent our continuing efforts to fulfill our long-term sustainability mission.”

Snowbird is not the first resort in Utah to offer EV charging stations but it now has the largest capacity of any other ski resort in Utah. The chargers will be available to Snowbird day and overnight guests and are located conveniently in covered parking, out of the elements.

Averaging over 500 inches of annual snowfall per year, while conveniently located just 29 miles from Salt Lake City International Airport, Snowbird is North America’s most accessible alpine resort destination.
