The Making Of Refresh, Part 3: Utah

Over at the freeskiing blog of ESPN, you can check out the philosophical argument that is ensuing over freestyle skiing.  Over here, you can check out the trailer for the Utah segment of Refresh.

I think most people would be more than okay with all the snow dumping in the clip.... most people.

Ready for that new ski pad in Deer Valley?

jh (jh)

Start saving those pennies folks; a new house is on the market and it's screaming to be purchased.  I personally think this is better than the Donald's property which sold awhile back.  Maybe I'm biased a little, but not too much.

How about 20k sq ft on 64 acres? Yes, please.  If you did answer yes, Jon Huntsman's crown jewel is up on the market.  Recession what?!?

I can't for the life of me get the video on ABC 4's website to post, so check it out over there.  Maybe some day they will make it easy or I'll get a clue.  Feel free to leave a comment explaining how I can get that video on this post; I'll appreciate the guidance.

By the way, Dallas cops stink.  I got a ticket last night and I'm still not happy about it.  I DID NOT see the "no right turn on red" sign.  How many ways can I say that so you'll understand?  Whatever.  The Huntsman House is now out of my price range - I've got to pay for my ticket.

Powderhorn chairs for sale at Solitude

powderhornlift (powderhornlift)

Anyone looking to own a piece of Utah ski history will have the opportunity this week when Solitude Mountain Resort begins selling the chairs from the old Powderhorn ski lift. The 1970's era double chairs can be purchased for $250 each, or $295 with the seat pad included.

The Powderhorn lift has been taken apart to make way for the new Powderhorn II, a fixed-grip quad that will be installed in time for the '09-'10 season. The new lift will start in a different location, halfway up the mountain, to make it easier for expert skiers to do laps on the steep runs while avoiding the beginner's area at the bottom.

Some long-time Solitude skiers may lament the fact that another classic double-chair is being retired, but having one in your backyard as a swing or bench means being able to sit down in the summer and imagine that you're on the Powderhorn lift, being being taken to the top of Solitude for a powder-day run.

For anyone who wants to take a look at the Powderhorn chairs, they are currently being kept in the lower parking lot. The chairs go on sale beginning Monday, August 9th and will be sold on a first come, first serve basis. For more information, call Solitude Mountain Resort at 801-536-5752

Lamborghini drivers to help underprivileged Utah children at Park City event

Ready for a little excess?  And by a little I mean A LOT.  Look no further than Park City today and tomorrow - 2009 Giro Lamborghini.  I'm not going to lie- I would love to drive one of these machines.  Today is the arrival of around 35 Lambos in Park City.

August 8th the Lamborghini's and their owners will follow police agents escorting less fortunate kids in police cars to the Utah Olympic Sports Park.  The kids will take turns riding in the sports cars on fun local roads.  And after the ride, they will get to watch the U.S. Aerial Olympic Ski Team's practice at a special viewing.

Event attendees will gather at Stein Eriksen Lodge in Park City at 8:30 in the morning before going to the Olympic Sports Park.

"Shop with a Cop" is a non-profit organization made possible by several local law enforcement agencies in Utah to grant the wishes of less fortunate children.

Highlights from last year's event (warning- watch this only if you have a high tolerance for really annoying music):

Vanishing Bolivian Glacier Ends High Ski Run, Threatens Water

chacaltaya_glacier (chacaltaya_glacier)

It's not often that I'll mention Bolivia and skiing in the same sentence, but a recent story from Bloomberg should give us all some food for thought.  Hate it or love it, believe in it or not - global warming is a bit scary.

When the Chacaltaya glacier vanished six years sooner than scientists predicted, a victim of global warming, so too did the world’s highest ski run.

The loss of the 18,000-year-old glacier this year that loomed above Bolivia’s altiplano threatens to diminish water supplies to 2 million people clustered around La Paz, according to the World Bank, leaving Jade Dragon in China and India’s Gulmarg as the highest remaining ski areas for the adventurous.

We all need to think how our actions impact others and the world around us - or we all may be skiing on rocks.

Will the real Ski Utah Yeti please stand up?

carnival-snow-face (carnival-snow-face)Believe it or not, winter is around the corner. In fact, Utah saw its first snow last year on August 30! To celebrate the approaching winter season, Ski Utah is kicking off its 90-day countdown to snow with a “Melting Yeti Contest” at Utah’s Hogle Zoo on Saturday, August 8.

Ski Utah will display a seven-foot-tall ice sculpture of “the yeti” created by Iceworks from 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. at the Zoo on Sat., Aug. 8. Zoo-goers will have the opportunity to guess how long the frozen yeti will withstand the sizzling summer heat before melting. The participant who guesses the time the yeti will melt will win two passes to every Utah ski resort, nearly a $2,000 value. Children are also invited to bring their teddy bears to the Ski Utah booth and receive a free season pass for their furry friends.

In addition, Ski Utah will have information on preseason pass sales and discounts enabling local families to enjoy The Greatest Snow on Earth at the most affordable prices possible. Families will also have the chance to learn about the Ski Utah Fifth Grade Passport and Sixth Grade SnowPass, the best ways for fifth and sixth graders to hit the slopes this winter. Through the program, fifth graders can ski three times free at each of Utah’s 13 world-class resorts utilizing the Passport, and sixth graders can enjoy one day of free snowriding at each resort with the SnowPass.

What: Ski Utah Melting Yeti Contest
Where: Utah’s Hogle Zoo (2600 Sunnyside Ave, Salt Lake City, UT)
When: Saturday, August 8, 10 a.m.- 3 p.m.
