The snow industry trade show went down in Denver the first weekend of February and here's a look at product and trends for next season...
Lessons pay off. Plain and simple, don't try to teach your kids to ski or snowboard...too stressful on them and you. We've had a little snowboarding break, but we're back to boarding and Brighton and learning...it's about the pants.
With fresh snow on the ground and the holidays around the corner, it's a great time to think of a ski vacation. The great thing is, many resorts run great family deals this time of the year and if you have young kids, chances are...they ski FREE!
Dressing the kids properly can be challenging. What jackets, gloves, hats and helmets are best? It is expensive, let's be honest. I cut corners in some areas and not in others. Here are my suggestions on how to get kids to the slopes warm and hopefully, affordable!
Brennan started the season off with a brand new tiny Burton LTR snowboard and high hopes. He ended the season as a little champ and as his instructor said "one of the best 4 year olds I've ever seen on a snowboard."
After completing the backcountry introductory class in February, I was waiting for the opportunity to get out into the great wide-open and ride some fresh lines. Way back in the day, snowboards were made by just taking an adult board and making it smaller. Not any more! Have you wondered how it is that boards are easier to learn on and why even at 3, kids catch on? I chatted with the Burton folks who made it possible.
I'm going to be the first to admit; I know nothing about snowboarding. But, I think I'm about to. Bren has asked to so "surfboarding" for awhile. See, for him, it's a surfboard. I'm a skier and I'll be honest, have really no desire to try boarding. I can barely navigate straight down the hill on my skis, how would I do it falling on my rear and sliding sideways? I'll leave it to my little guy.
So, when a few months ago I found out about The Burton Riglet Tour at the Canyons, I had to check it out. It was a mini snowboard park set up for kids as young as 3 to try boarding. Keep in mind, that also means there needs to be a tiny board for them. Burton has introduced an 80 cm board for the little guys.

For those of us with kids the thought of getting them on the snow is exciting, but, also a little frustrating. With getting boots, helmets, goggles, mittens, dragging them up the slope, trying to tell them how to ride, it's easy to forget that this is supposed to be fun! Burton was in town last week with 2002 Winter Olympic Gold Medalist Ross Powers to introduce some of the new innovations they've come up with to help get younger kids shredding and to make life a little easier on parents as well. Check it out.
On January 6th, Burton's Riglet Park Tour hits Canyons. This is a four-stop mobile product demo and mini snowboard park designed to introduce kids as young as three to snowboarding. Hitting partner resorts in Vermont and Utah, the Burton Riglet Park tour offers snowboarding instruction and product demos to kids in a fun learning environment.
Brighton opened today and good times were had by all. With two lifts and a few runs open it was good to be back on the snow. The Brighton terrain park crew did a great job getting a selection of jibs and rails out. Burton Snowboards was also there doing board demos. Itching to ride? Get on up to Brighton and take a few laps and butter some boxes.
