What is corn snow and why is it so fun to ski?
East coaster, Edward Massey, set out to ski every corner of Utah this past January. Read his story as he skied over 367,000 vertical feet over Utah's 14 downhill and 4 nordic resorts.
March 8-13 come watch the worlds best skiers absolutely give it their all on Snowbirds North Baldy.
I'm going to cover 2 different topics. A quick synopsis of my background: I am a Meteorologist. I have been in the broadcast industry for nearly 20 years (OK, I'm aging myself) and until recently, worked full time as the main Meteorologist for the Fox affiliate here in Salt Lake. I know do freelance weather for the local NBC affiliate in SLC. I'm telling you this because I'd like to give you a little info on SLC weather and a little mountain Meteorology and why Utah really has "The Greatest Snow on Earth".
Second topic will be one of the best ski days I've ever had! A powder day at Snowbird with a 3 year old staying on the Chickadee lift and watching him have such a great time! A mother/son day of skiing and lunch...doesn't get any better or make me more proud!
My friend Johanna Kirk submitted this awesome story a while back about going with ski patrol at Snowbird to shoot avalanche guns. It is so easy to forget the amount of effort resorts put into snow safety so we can continue to enjoy worry-fee powder days. Check out Johanna's account and feel free to check out here blog as well at: http://joshutterbugmama.blogspot.com
The North Face Masters of Snowboarding features a $15,000 cash prize purse and an opportunity for Big Mountain snowboarders to pit themselves against athlete and mountain alike. The North Face Masters returns to Snowbird, January 21 & 22, 2011, where competitors look forward to the notoriously challenging Little Cottonwood Canyon terrain littered with chutes, cliff drops, and the legendary lake-effect Utah powder.
In case you haven't noticed, Utah has been getting hammered. When we made this video yesterday we were talking about 50 inches in two days. Looks like we'll have another 1-2 feet to add to the tally by the end of tomorrow. Get to Utah for the holidays.
The snow has arrived in full force and we're looking at a pretty great start to the season and hopefully a good snow year thanks to La Nina. That is a discussion for another blog.
So, we've rented the skis and we're ready to head out. Now, I'm not as mobile as my other fellow bloggers. With my equipment, Emily's, Brennan's and 2 kids in tow....it takes us awhile. The key is to pick a day when everyone is rested and happy....otherwise, you'll be very crabby by the end of the day :)
I thought I'd take Emily first alone. Just to get her "ski legs". What's that? Well, for those of you who have skied before, it is the first day of the season to take it easy and sort of "remember" how to ski. After our very successful season last year with Emily, I thought, no biggie...she's ready to go straight up the lift. NOOOO! Last run of last year was down the tram at Snowbird. For those that haven't skiied much, it is a challenging run for us adults let alone the kids.
Looking for a great avalanche course that is as concise as it is informative? Sign up for the Freeride Avalanche Summit at Snowbird. Very useful information from the best in the biz.
