Deer Valley Lodging at Motel Prices
Posted by Kendall on January 6, 2009
For
me, Deer Valley is one of those places I love to visit for a day of
skiing but my pocket book won't even consider the price of staying
there. I know, I'm in the wrong business to consider a vacation stay.
While there are ways to ease the blow to the bank account when headed
to Deer Valley (early lift ticket locals book prices, Snowpark Lodge
locals dining card), deals and Deer Valley don't really go hand-in-hand.
Then I caught a wiff of this deal from Deer Valley Lodging - $99 a night to stay at either the Lodges at Deer Valley or the Silver Baron Lodge. I thought for sure it was a typo, but after some checking it's the real deal.
Don't think a motel costs $99 a night? Without opening up an old wound and pouring in a pint of lemon juice, I can tell you from an unfortunate Park City President's Day get-away gone bad that the even the most grimy road side motel in a surrounding community will set you back a Ben Franklin.
I think I could get used to hanging out there after a day of skiing
On top of the rock bottom rate, you also get a free hearty hot breakfast (think Snow Park Lodge style), free in-room WiFi, free shuttle service to and from the resorts and town.
Seriously, where's the catch? Ok, so it's double occupancy, but still at $198 a night for a slice of lodging paradise I'm thinking locals should be participating in a little economic stimulation in Deer Valley.
Speaking of locals and deals, if you do score this deal with Deer Valley Lodging be in the know and get your lift tickets in the Salt Lake valley at a shop like Canyon Sports. You'll likely save enough to pay for lunch on the hill.
Book the Deer Valley Lodging deal and stay before February 11.
Alta Lodge for Thanksgiving
Posted by Kendall on November 24, 2008
Although Eric posted about the various Thanksgiving meals at the resorts, I just got this in my inbox about a ski and stay package over Thanksgiving to the Alta Lodge.
Lucky skiers will find Thanksgiving time at Alta Ski Area satiating their appetites for early skiing during the holiday weekend.
Families make the annual retreat to the Alta Lodge for an extended weekend of skiing and relaxing. It’s easy to plan a holiday get-away with a four-day package that includes free lodging, breakfasts and dinners for children ages 18 and under who stay in the same room with their parents. The package also includes three days of lift tickets for two adults and is priced at $2,126 or $1,538 for one adult. Children’s lift tickets are priced separately.
This year’s Thanksgiving dinner will include an appetizer, insalata di mare with herb aioli; butternut squash soup with sweet red pepper puree; tossed green salad with goat cheese, toasted pecans and passion fruit vinaigrette; roasted turkey with pan gravy, apricot and wild rice dressing, lingonberries, mashed potatoes and roasted root vegetables and traditional pumpkin pie.
Makes me hungry just typing it!
How Many Steps to the Alta Lodge?
Posted by Kendall on November 22, 2007
If you've ever been to the Alta Lodge there are three things you'll likely not forget.
- The character wooden steps that descend from the main road in a seemingly never ending drop to the lodge, adorned with ski images of years gone by. It's almost reminiscent of going down a mine shaft of Alta's glory years.
- The aged lobby that gave you the feeling that you just went back in time a couple of decades but that you're "home"
- The proximity to and the views of Alta's famous run High Rustler.
Built in 1939 the Alta Lodge has long been a favorite for skiers
headed up Little Cottonwood Canyon. As you descend the steps from the
road the sides of the tunnel walls are lined with photos of long ago
powder days and even one very old image of the lodge itself.
There's no doubt that this is a skiers lodge, not a destination 5 star
hotel for the rich and famous. It's a cool place to be weather during
the winter or the summer.
New for this season skiers will be entering an entirely remodeled lobby and deck room. The new look and feel reminded me of a swanky boutique hotel at Squaw Valley that I stayed at a few years back. It's very comfortable and definitely more of a modern feel. The front desk looks more up scale boutique than a skiers lodge, but it's still run and operated by people with a passion for skiing. You can see it in their eyes.
Next time you're up Little Cottonwood Canyon, be sure to check out the Alta Lodge.
CONTEST
We're giving away lunch for two to the Alta Lodge (I didn't mention that they have a great restaurant) for the first person who can comment with the correct number of steps that you must go down to get from the road to the entry of the Alta Lodge. Good luck.
