Tour the New USSA "Center of Excellence"

On July 17th, don't miss your chance to tour the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association's new national training and education facility, the Center of Excellence in Park City. The public is welcomed for the dedication beginning at noon Friday, July 17, followed by public tours. From FirstTracksOnline.com:

The tours will provide fans with the opportunity to see the unique athletic center firsthand, including the athlete training area, sport science lab and sports medicine rehab facility. National team athletes will be on hand to speak with the public and to sign autographs.

The Center of Excellence opened its doors to the nation's top ski and snowboarding athletes in May, signaling a new era for the century-old sports organization whose roots in Utah go back over 35 years. The 85,000 square-foot center will be a showcase for the sports, providing elite-level training and serving as an educational resource for the USSA's members and 400 clubs nationwide.

The Center of Excellence is the home for the USSA's top athletes, a headquarters for the Olympic sports organization, and an educational resource for athletes, coaches, judges and officials and parents. It is part of a long-term vision developed by the USSA over a decade ago, adding to the legacy of athlete training facilities spawned by the Salt Lake City Olympics. Those Games vitalized the culture of athletics in Utah with the opening of the Utah Olympic Park in the early '90s, along with the development of Soldier Hollow cross country skiing facilities and world-class venues like Park City Mountain Resort and Deer Valley Resort that remain active in competitive skiing and snowboarding.

The Center of Excellence was built on five acres just east of Park City in Quinn's Junction at the intersection of U.S. 40 and Utah 248. It is part of a bustling athletic and medical complex featuring athletic fields, an indoor ice rink, the National Ability Center and a new Intermountain Healthcare hospital.

The dedication ceremony will take place outside the Center of Excellence from 12:00-12:30 p.m. Public tours of the Center will follow from 12:30-3:00 p.m.

Salt Lake City Chill Benefit Party

Chill is the program begun by Burton Snowboards to give inner city kids a chance to learn how to snowboard and in-turn enjoy the mountains and nature. I know first hand what a great program this is. I went through it with a great kid from my neighborhood and it was amazing to see how this program broadened their horizons. Here is a video that I shot during last seasons Chill program.

The Chill Program deserves your support so you might as well give them $5 and go to a fun party at the Circle Lounge on March 26th. That way Joe and Nick can keep showing the Chill kids that there's a whole big world out there besides what surrounds them in the city. See you there.

Intelligent Design at Park City

Leave it to Park City to step it up in the world of snowboard events. Host to the 2002 Winter Olympic Games Snowboard events, the World Superpipe Championships and a pile of other top tier level events, they are stepping it up by hosting the the Intelligent Design (IDPC) on Saturday, March 7, 2009 in the spectator friendly Pick 'N Shovel park and Eagle Superpipe.

Park City Mountain Resort's Intelligent Design contest

While the title sounds more like a science convention that they'd hold in the adjacent Marriott Hotel, the IDPC will attract the best snowboarders in the world, including Shaun White, Torstein Horgmo and Andreas Wiig, as they compete on a uniquely designed course that includes big air, half-pipe and jibbing.

Why? Well, for fame, bragging rights and a piece of the $50,000 prize purse.

“We hosted six successful World Superpipe Championships and as industry leaders we felt it was time to come up with a new snowboard competition idea,”
said Jim Mangan, action sports marketing director for Park City Mountain Resort and course designer for the IDPC. “This event will be the first of its kind, combining slopestyle and halfpipe into a single course.”

Check the details at theidpc.com. Admission is free, of course.

Need a place to lay your head? If you're coming in from out of town, they've got a special IDPC lodging package that provides lodging and lift tickets for less than $115 per person/per night and it includes access to the IDPC after-party at Harry O’s (a private club for members).

Visa Freestyle - Pictures

the-world-cup-22 (the-world-cup-22) My brother Nick was up at Deer Valley last week for the Visa Freestyle event. He took some awesome pictures that you should check out over on his blog.

After work on Saturday the first of February I went up and shot the World Cup Moguls event. It was awesome to see these athletes cruising down the course that is the length of about two football field. It would only take them about an average of twenty-five seconds. WOW that was fast. I was posted up at the bottom of the course shooting with a Nikon D200 with a 300mm f/2.8 lens (Bazooka Lens).
