ADOPT-A-NATIVE-ELDER PROGRAM SPONSORS 28TH ANNUAL NAVAJO RUG SHOW

October 31 2017

DEER VALLEY RESORT; PARK CITY, UTAH (October 31, 2017) – The annual Navajo Rug Show and Sale returns in its 28th year to Deer Valley Resort's Snow Park Lodge, November 10-12, 2017. Attendees can experience the authentic Navajo culture through weaving demonstrations, singing and other traditions, while supporting Navajo elders by purchasing their hand-woven rugs and hand-crafted jewelry. The event provides an important economic support for elders in the Adopt-a-Native Elder Program and their families and builds awareness for the general public about the Navajo culture and people.

"The Rug Show gives attendees some unforgettable experiences like meeting a Navajo elder and their family, learning about a unique Navajo tradition, and gaining a new appreciation for such a beautiful culture,” said Adopt-a-Native-Elder Program Founder Linda Myers. “The public’s generous support over the years has made such a positive impact on our elders who receive all proceeds from the sale of their goods.”

Elders look to Mother Earth to inspire their hand-made creations. For this year’s event, weavers will showcase rugs they have woven in the Teec Nos Pos style, considered to be one of the most intricately detailed of all Navajo rug designs.

Adopt-A-Native-Elder assists more than 500 Navajo elders living traditionally in remote areas of the Navajo Reservation in Southern Utah and Northern Arizona. Volunteers deliver food, clothing, medical supplies and other necessities twice a year to support the elders and to build a bridge of hope between cultures.

The three-day event kicks off Friday, November 10, with a preview and sale of traditional hand-woven Navajo rugs, jewelry and crafts from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Deer Valley’s Snow Park Lodge. Guests will enjoy hors d’oeuvres and live entertainment and have the opportunity to view and purchase the complete selection of rugs at a 10 percent discount. A live auction featuring the rugs, trips and special gift packages will take place from 8 to 9 p.m. with proceeds benefiting the Adopt-a-Native-Elder Program. Admission is $30 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. Tickets can be purchased at the door or with a credit card by calling 435-649-0535.

The Rug Show and Sale continues Saturday, November 11, and Sunday, November 12, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday’s activities include the Navajo Children's Princess Pageant at 10 a.m., a weaving demonstration at 1 p.m., Navajo Grandma Idol contest at 3 p.m., followed by the Navajo Grandpa Idol contest at 4 p.m. Festivities conclude on Sunday with a Navajo Veterans ceremony at 10 a.m., a weaving demonstration at 1 p.m., and a closing pow wow at 3:30 p.m. Admission is $5 each day.

All funds generated from the sale of rugs and jewelry go directly to the elders. The Rug Show is supported by grants from the Utah Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Summit County Restaurant Tax.
