Music in the Mountains

July 11 2016

Powder Mountain Resort and Summit Powder Mountain are excited to announce the third annual Music in the Mountainschamber music festival, with concerts on Friday July 15th at 7:00 pm, and Sunday July 17th at 4:00 pm, atop Powder Mountain and free to the public.

Music in the Mountains is a premier summer chamber music festival in Eden, Utah, presented annually by Powder Mountain.   Inspired by the beauty and spirit of this region, in 2014, violinist Michelle Ross partnered with Powder Mountain in order to bring the best young classical musicians to Eden.  Music in the Mountains is also proud to collaborate with Utah Symphony musicians.  Artists in Residence travel to Eden each season to live and rehearse in this spectacular mountain setting, interact with the community in various outreach events, and culminate their residency by performing concerts on the very top of Powder Mountain.

Michelle Ross, violinist and Artistic Director of the series, will be joined by four of the most exciting young classical musicians in the country: Utah Symphony’s principal violist Brant Bayless, violinist Areta Zhulla, cellist Brook Speltz, and pianist Euntaek Kim.  This season is centered around the Ravel Piano Trio and Shostakovich Piano Quintet.  We will also feature works by Olivier Messiaen, a French composer who lived and composed in Utah and was inspired heavily by Bryce Canyon, and works by Bach, Mozart, Dvorak, Scriabin.

“Last year as we were playing John Adams ‘Shaker Loops,’ the breeze flowed in from the mountains, and I could hear the audience’s breath as palpably as my own, nestled into Timberline Lodge and seated 360 degrees around the musicians.  It’s a unique and ideal setting for chamber music: the awe-inspiring majesty of the mountains married with the intimacy of a wooden lodge.  Another highlight from last year was performing for teenagers at Youth Futures, a Youth Homeless Shelter in Ogden, Utah,” says Ross.

Michelle Ross is a recipient of the Leonore Annenberg Fellowship Award, and recently completed a 33-day performance project around NYC, “Discovering Bach,” noted by The New Yorker’s Alex Ross.  Her debut album of the Complete Sonatas and Partitas of J. S. Bach will be release in 2017.  She is in great demand around the U.S. and internationally as soloist, chamber musician, orchestral leader, and composer, a recent recipient of a New Music USA grant.

Music in the Mountains maintains a mission to make exceptional live classical music available to all.  The concerts will be preceded by food, drinks, and a pre-concert talk with the musicians.

The exceptional venue is a winter resort that towers over Ogden Valley.  Powder Mountain is the perfect location with 360 degrees views of surrounding valleys and States, amidst wildflowers, pines and aspens.  Powder Mountain is located only 60 minutes from downtown Salt Lake City and 20 minutes from Ogden City.

The concerts will be performed at Timberline Lodge, at the top of State Road 158.  Please contact us and check the social feeds for up to date information.
