Ski Utah and Resort Partners Promote Carpooling and Public Transportation for POW Day

January 8 2019

SALT LAKE CITY (January 9, 2018) – Ski Utah and Protect Our Winters, in partnership with Utah Transit Authority (UTA), Alta Ski Area, Powder Mountain, Snowbird, Solitude Mountain Resort and Sundance Mountain Resort, will be encouraging skiers and riders to carpool, rideshare or ride UTA to help lower CO2 emissions, reduce traffic congestion and increase awareness around environmental accountability as part of the fourth annual POW Day on January 13, 2019.

Ski Utah has partnered with Protect Our Winters since 2015 to raise local and national awareness around environmental responsibility and preserving healthy winters for generations to come. POW Day was established in 2016. January 13 is statistically the snowiest day in Utah based on 50 years of snow data.

Skiers and riders who carpool, rideshare or take UTA to participating ski resorts on January 13 can share their journey on social media using the hashtag #POWDay19 to be entered to win a variety of prizes. Participating resorts will also offer the following benefits:

Alta Ski Area: Preferred parking for carpools with three or more people at the Wild Cat Base Area (first come, first serve)

Snowbird: Preferred parking for carpools with three or more people at Entry 1 and Entry 2 (first come, first serve)

Solitude Mountain Resort: Preferred parking for carpools with three or more people in the Moonbeam Base Area - Entry 1 (first come, first serve)

Sundance Mountain Resort: Preferred parking for carpools with three or more people in the lower parking lot (first come, first serve)

Powder Mountain: UTA bus riders and carpools with three or more people will receive a two-for-one weekday ticket voucher and a POW sticker. The first 200 guests will get a free coffee or hot chocolate coupon (subject to availability)

For snow enthusiasts who prefer public transportation, Ski Utah and UTA will make sure they have plenty of information to navigate their way to the resorts. The Ski Utah app includes a ‘Ride The Bus’ tab that allows any user to use their location to find the fastest public transit route to any Utah resort. Download the iRideUTA app to view routes and real time locations of UTA’s bus, TRAX and FrontRunner routes. Riders can purchase ski bus fare using the free UTA GoRide app.

“POW Day is all about showing that taking public transit or carpooling to the mountains is not only a feasible option in Utah but also a great way to help make a difference,” said Ski Utah President and CEO Nathan Rafferty. “We want to help spread the word and educate locals and visitors alike so that these behaviors will become second nature.”
