EVE: The Evolution of First Night, Pro Athletes Compete at the Rail Jam

December 16, 2009

Salt Lake City – After a successful sixteen year run, First Night, Salt Lake City’s traditional New Year’s Eve event is more than tripling in size and scope to become a three-day celebration called EVE. On Dec. 29, 30 and 31, tens of thousands of people will gather for celebrations in streets, squares, plazas, theaters and performing arts venues throughout Utah’s capital city.

EVE features the USANA Rail Jam—ski and snowboard action sports competitions—on Gallivan Plaza. Sixty top skiers and snowboarders will rip it on a 3-story high rail set-up covered with 50 tons of snow.

There are three pro caliber rails, each different in shape and style, giving athletes options for different tricks and the audience an opportunity to view a variety of moves—the same stunt will not happen twice. KAB Rails (a local company based in Murray) built the structure for EVE and also builds terrain parks for the top ski resorts in the state.

“One of the best things about Salt Lake City is its proximity to several world class ski and snowboard resorts. The Rail Jam will bring the greatest snow on earth to the heart of city for three days of exciting competitions involving the finest athletes in the region,” said Jessica Kunzer, director of communications for Ski Utah.

USANA chose to partner with EVE and Rail Jam because of the company’s dedication to healthy living through exercise and nutrition. For more than 15 years, athletes from around the globe have trusted USANA nutritional supplements to increase their energy levels and maintain their health. USANA Health Sciences is one of America’s leading companies in the field of health and strives to improve the lives of those around the world.

USANA's team of highly trained scientists follow Good Manufacturing Practices to ensure the safety and quality of each product, products that have been proven so safe, effective, and free of contaminants that renowned organizations such as U.S. Speedskating, Speed Skating Canada, Biathlon Canada, the elite athletes of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour and a myriad of other professional athletes worldwide trust their health to USANA.

Evenings at EVE also include fine art performances, live local music, dance parties, DJs, film screenings, laser shows, art installations, world music, activities for kids and pet lovers, interactive resolutions, story telling and a spectacular midnight fireworks show on Dec. 31.  A new community giving project called eBay It Forward will give Utahns an opportunity to contribute treasured items to a massive art installation, raising funds for local charities.

A three-day EVE Pass wristband is $15 and provides access to all activities. Passes are available online at EVEslc.com and at retail locations including Fresh Markets (formerly Albertsons), Beans and Brews Coffee Houses and the concierge at The Gateway. Downtown restaurants and hotels are offering EVE packages and special pricing for the three-day event.

EVE is hosted at venues throughout downtown including Gallivan Plaza, The Gateway, Temple Square, Pierpont Avenue, Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center, Broadway Cinema, Joseph Smith Memorial Building and Off Broadway Theater. Corporate community partners include American Express, USANA, eBay, Comcast, City Weekly, Intermountain Healthcare, Coca-Cola and the LDS Foundation.
