High West Distillery Introduces Two New Whiskies

PARK CITY, Utah (January 31, 2011) – High West Distillery and Saloon has added two new rye whiskeys to its award winning High West Whiskey portfolio: Double Rye! and 12 Year Old Rye.  Though both are rye whiskeys, their profiles are very different and showcase the variety possible in a rye whiskey.  Both debuted during Sundance Film Festival week, the busiest time in Park City.

Double Rye! is a unique marriage of a spirited two-year-old straight rye and a saddle smooth sixteen-year-old straight rye.  The two year old has a mashbill with 95% rye and 5% barley malt.  The sixteen year old has a mashbill of 53% rye and 37% corn. The extra age and corn provides smoothness and sweetness to calm the younger rye, creating a complex whiskey great for sipping alone or for use in a classic cocktail.  Sourmash Manifesto rated Double Rye! “Superb/ Outstanding…Truly unique! High West’s 12-Year-Old Rye will be available exclusively at the High West Distillery and Saloon in Park City for $49.99/375ml. The distillery acquired five barrels of rye whiskey from the former Seagram’s Distillery in Lawrenceberg, Indiana. The barrels were originally destined for Japan in 2003, but the container was full and these five didn’t make the trip.  John Hansell from Malt Advocate Magazine rated this whiskey 93 points saying “It’s the American whiskey equivalent of drinking Ardbeg Supernova. Powerful and invigorating ... If you just can’t get enough rye in your whiskey, then this one’s for you.”
