SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH - Ski Utah hosted its annual local media day at Solitude Mountain Resort today. The event is designed to recognize Utah’s local media support of the Utah ski and snowboard industry.
Each year at the event, Ski Utah presents two awards to media members who have significantly aided the promotion of The Greatest Snow on Earth®. The Local Media Member Award is given to the individual who best shares their passion for Utah winter sports through their work. This year’s recipients are Tim Hughes and Jeff Sory of KSL Outdoor Radio. For the past four seasons, Tim and Jeff have made a concentrated effort to feature ski and snowboard resorts around the state and encourage Utahan’s to ski and snowboard through the Snow Day segment of their show.
In addition to the Journalism Award, Ski Utah also honors a Weather Enthusiast of the Year. This award is given to the person who best celebrates Utah’s winter weather and encourages their audience to embrace The Greatest Snow on Earth®. This year’s recipient is Craig Gordon with the Utah Avalanche Center (UAC). Gordon has worked as an avalanche forecaster since 2000. Gordon developed the Know Before You Go avalanche education program for young adults in Utah.
“Ski Utah highly values our relationship with our local media,” said Ski Utah President Nathan Rafferty. “Their efforts are integral to achieving our mission of further promoting Utah’s Greatest Snow on Earth® and strengthening its impact to the economy.”
Media guests also witnessed a ceremonial signing of HB0201 by Governor Gary Herbert, which designates Skiing and Snowboarding as the official winter sports of Utah. Representative Steve Eliason (R) sponsored the Bill during the 2012 Utah General Session. Park City Mountain Resort President/GM & Ski Utah Board Chairwoman Jenni Smith, a member of the Utah Olympic Exploratory Committee, also delivered a brief presentation on the future of Utah’s Olympic Legacy.
