Snowbird Hosts Backcountry Awareness Party and Free Clinics Feb. 6

January 21, 2010

Snowbird, Utah – Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort will host two free backcountry awareness clinics Saturday, Feb. 6, followed by a fundraising party for the Friends of the Utah Avalanche Center (UAC). Both events are sponsored by the Snowbird Renaissance Center.

“Fundraisers are a crucial element in supporting the Friends of the Utah Avalanche Center with their ongoing outreach and education initiatives, which directly help to inform all backcountry users how to recreate safely in Utah's mountains,” said Craig Gordon of the UAC. “We hope to see lots of old and new faces up at Snowbird for what is sure to be a fantastic event.”

The Friends of the UAC fundraising party will take place in the Golden Cliff at Snowbird’s Cliff Lodge from 4:30-7 p.m. and includes live music and a silent auction with items from Snowbird, Black Diamond and Dynastar among others. Tickets are $50 and include beer, wine and hors d’oeuvres. Please visit www.snowbirdrc.org or call (801) 933-2112 to purchase.

Members of Wasatch Backcountry Rescue will be offering two 2-hour classes for the public during the day covering basic and intermediate backcountry skills that will mix classroom and on-snow instruction. The workshops are free, with donations encouraged. Groups will meet at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Alpine Room on Level 2 of the Snowbird Center. Participants are asked to bring a transceiver if they can and dress appropriately for the outdoors.

The Friends of the Utah Avalanche Center is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation organized to support and contribute to the avalanche education and forecasting activities provided by the Forest Service Utah Avalanche Center.
