Special Olympics Utah to host annual Shred the Edge Event

December 12, 2011

Special Olympics Utah will host its annual Shred the Edge event, formally known as Ski for Gold, at Brighton Resort in Big Cottonwood Canyon Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011.

Special Olympics Utah, Harmons, Pepsi, Today’s 106.5 and Brighton Resort invite all in the community to participate in this ski and snowboarding fund raising event. The University of Utah Ski Team will join Special Olympics athletes, teams and donors on the mountain for a day of powder, competition and prizes. The Utah Ski Team will be setting up a race course, and participants will have the opportunity to challenge the times of the ski team members.

“Special Olympics Utah is excited to be able to bring this event to the community,” said Amy Hansen, Special Olympics Utah CEO. “Shred the Edge is a great fund raiser, and we are honored to have such fantastic partners and sponsors. We love getting the community involved in our events, and hope to see everyone on the mountain next week.”

All skiers and snowboarders can sign up as individuals or with friends and family at the website below. With a $50 donation (per person), each participant will receive a free lift pass for the day. Additional prizes are available for donations of $100 or more, the largest individual fundraiser, the largest fundraising team, the most runs and the fastest race time. Prizes include Skullcandy earbuds, embroidered beanies, lunch at the lodge, a Harmons gift certificate, free day passes to Brighton and entrance into the Grand Prize Drawing to win a ski trip to Big Sky Resort in Montana this winter.

Those who want to participate must pre-register by Dec. 16 and either pay $50 when they register or bring money the day of the event. At the registration page, participants can set up a personal or team fund raising page, allowing them to collect pledges and direct potential donors to the website to donate on their fund raising page. All donations go directly to benefit the athletes of Special Olympics Utah.

The Shred the Edge event gives the Special Olympics Utah community a productive way to develop athletic skills and have fun, while interacting with one another and those who champion the program. As athletes watch each other demonstrate courage, develop physical fitness and experience joy, they also cheer one another on as they progress in their lives.
