Eagle Point: Kids 17 and under ski free

By Harriet Wallis, the geezer gal

You read it right. Kids 17 and under ski and ride free. Book your lodging through Eagle Point's central reservations (855-EAGLE-PT) and stay at the resort's condos, cabins or other on-site lodging and you get the ski free deal for your kids. Or book through Eagle Point and stay at the Comfort Inn in Beaver about 20 miles away.

I sat down with Shane Gadbaw, the resort's CEO, and got an update at what's going on at the central Utah resort. Gadbaw, a former real estate investor, escaped Wall Street  to take over the reins of the sometimes-on, sometimes-off  resort. The resort reopened as Eagle Point in 2010.

Since then, he's focused on the resort's key features: It has all natural snow, it caters to families, and storm chasers know there's untracked snow long after a storm on the resort's steep face. Eagle Point is located 3-1/2 hours south of Salt Lake City in the Tushar Mountains east of Beaver.

Crowds? Don’t expect them. A busy day is 500 people.

The resort has plenty of snow and skiing is good – and that's before the recent dumps. The resort is normally open Thursday through Sunday. But it's open throughout all holiday periods.

Gadbaw wants people to enjoy the resort as their home away from home. "You work hard to get here, and we work hard so you'll have a good time," he said. As an investor-type, he hopes people will have such a good time they'll buy their second home at Eagle Point. But no pressure. No gimmicks. Just have a good time.

"It's Utah's best kept secret for a reason," he said. "But you have to come here and find out the reason for yourself."
