I'm usually not a big fan of contests, mostly because I've never won anything in the past. But Snowbird is offering up a prize for their first annual Local Hero POV video contest that has me wondering: do I feel lucky, punk?
If you are like me and you own any sort of Point of View video apparatus, such as a Go Pro Hero HD, a Contour, or a Drift HD camera, you probably have tons of video clips from last winter. I have a a terabyte external drive filled with clips, so there's no shortage of material to work with. The challenge is always trying to figure out a reason to sit in front of the MacBook Pro on a sunny day and actually cobble together an edit worthy of sharing with the Utah powder community. I think I found as good a reason as any; Snowbird's Local Hero POV video contest.
Run entirely on their Facebook Fan Page, the contest is officially open for business, and the Grand Prizes (there are two; one for the best Ski video and one for the best Snowboard video) leave me thinking about the possibility of lifting off in the Wasatch Powderbird's flying machine, in search of endless lines of untracked powder. No doubt there will be lots of contenders, as a contest like this is going to make entrants work tirelessly to cut those terabytes of clips down to 3 minutes or less.
It's also potentially intimidating to know that someone like Powderhound Matt probably has better clips to choose from, considering he skied 3 times as many days as I did last winter. Maybe he'll get bogged down in the editing process. Maybe he's too busy shredding the Park City mountain bike trails. Maybe I can get a jump on the public voting (that's right, the community votes to narrow down the finalists). It may only be a 1 in a million shot. So you're telling me there's a chance?
