Park City, Utah (January 29, 2014) – Park City Mountain Resort will be well represented at the Winter Games when they open next week, with three of its own sponsored athletes among the Team USA contingency in Sochi. Ted Ligety (Ski Alpine), Sage Kotsenburg (Snowboard Slopestyle) and Joss Christensen (SkiSlopestyle) will each be medal contenders in their respective events.
Ligety, coming off an historic 2013 season in which he was the first man in 45 years to win three gold medals at one World Championships, will be one of the most closely watched athletes on the entire American team. A second place super combined finish last week in Kitzbuehel, Austria, the final race of the U.S. Olympic qualification period, has Ted arriving in Sochi with momentum in addition to podium experience. Ligety learned to ski and race at Park City Mountain Resort from a young age, and can be found finding his favorite powder stashes when home between international events.
One of the resort’s sponsored “Park City All Stars,” Park City native Sage Kotsenburgis a fixture in PCMR’s parks, a star of its “I Ride Park City” film series and one of the world’s strongest slopestyle competitors. With Snowboard Slopestyle making its Olympic debut at the Sochi Games, Sage clinched his Team USA spot with a win in the Sprint U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix finale two weeks ago.
Park City All Star Joss Christensen’s name was not at the center of early season speculation about who would be named to Team USA’s first ever Olympic Freeskiingteam. However, the Park City local forced his way into the only conversation that mattered by winning the final slopestyle competition of the team’s qualification window. Days later, Joss was added to the freeskiing roster and his ticket to Sochi was punched. That the event was hosted at Park City Mountain Resort, his home mountain, made it even sweeter.
