Winter is the Perfect Season to Tune Your Home Energy Conservation

I run cold, I mean really cold…both on the slopes and at home. With research, I dialed in my ski gear to stay toasty warm all day on the slopes, but at home, I still shiver.

Just as individualized gear helps skiers perform their best, homes perform better with a unique energy plan as well. Our Sugar House home built in 1887 is drafty. I keep kicking up the heat because my office is cooler than the rest of the house, thus increasing our gas bill. I’d much rather put that money towards my ski budget, and I’d like our home to be more eco-friendly as well. So, I decided it was time to address the issue.

Since research helped me select the best ski gear, I thought I could sort out our efficiency issues myself. But when I began looking into how to make our home more efficient I felt overwhelmed. Luckily, I remembered someone mentioning the ThermWise Program from Embridge Gas which helped them create a Home Energy Plan that included rebates for upgraded insulation.

ThermWise is a program that helps customers conserve energy and save money. The first step is to create a Home Energy Plan by scheduling either an in-home or virtual appointment with a Home Energy Expert who will sleuth out the inefficiencies of your abode. They are like your personal energy savings consultant!

If you feel handy, there is also a DIY option where you complete the survey yourself and submit it for review by ThermWise.

I opted for the in-home visit because our old house is rather complex (as in antique). I emailed for an appointment and heard back right away. It was easy to get our home energy survey scheduled for just a week out.

Once the survey is complete, you’ll receive a customized report showing what improvements can be made, approximately how much they will cost and how long it will take for the improvements to pay you back. Additionally, your report will include any weatherization or appliance rebates available to help you offset the cost of upgrades. For example, upgrading to a smart thermostat can improve your home’s efficiency and rebates are available to help reduce that cost.

While the frigid draft in our bedroom helps me wake up in the morning, I won’t miss it, so I’m looking forward to finding out how we can improve our home’s comfort and efficiency.  Perhaps soon I’ll be comfortable at home as I am on the slopes.
