5 Reasons to Visit Solitude Mountain Resort

With its laid back and friendly vibe, Solitude Mountain Resort has traditionally been a favorite among local Utahans. Perched in an intimate nook of Big Cottonwood Canyon, the atmosphere of Solitude’s slopes, its sprawling Nordic trails, and a quaint European village are complimented by an average annual snowfall of 500 inches. The terrain of Solitude encompasses wide-open bowls, glades, tree skiing, old-growth forests, steep chutes, wide and well-groomed cruisers, and gentle, rolling terrain near the base area.

The diversity of this mountain’s terrain is suited to the entire spectrum of skiing and snowboarding abilities. With excellent beginner and intermediate terrain, Solitude is often the first choice for those hoping to hone their skills. The expert terrain, steeps, trees, and legendary powder also make Solitude a favorite among hard-charging skiers and boarders. Below are five reasons to visit Solitude Mountain Resort.

1. The Greatest Snow on Earth is at Solitude

Utah’s reputation for unbeatable snow is no secret. The aridity of the region, the low water content of the falling snow, and the storms, supercharged during their passage over the Great Salt Lake, all contribute to crafting unforgettable powder skiing and snowboarding. With its many nooks and crannies, you can score some of the freshest tracks in Utah at Solitude.

Better yet, the Solitude Ski Patrol will frequently open incredible powdery terrain like Honeycomb Canyon, Headwall Forest, or Evergreen Chutes in the days following a storm. You can often enjoy deep powder long after a tempest has pummeled the resort.

Solitude historically has averaged 500 inches of snow each winter, complimented by 150 acres of snowmaking. Even in lean years, Solitude sees far more snow than many resorts in Colorado or elsewhere, so the skiing is still fantastic by the standards of most North American resorts. In terms of consistency and snow quality, Utah is nearly always the safest bet for those planning a ski vacation.

2.Cozy European Village

The quaint village at Solitude, modeled after European ski towns, is nestled in the flats near the Apex and Sunrise chairlifts. The proximity to the slopes and the variety of comfortable lodging options are a major bonus for visitors. Restricted to pedestrian use, Solitude Village is easily walkable and includes 3 restaurants, 2 pubs, a spa and various lodging options.

When sliding across the bridge to end your day, you’ll often hear the faint whisper of live music emanating from the Thirsty Squirrel. Don’t skip the chance to hear the tunes and order a towering stack of nachos or the baked brie. Pool, shuffleboard, and other games also await.

For those seeking a craft cocktail or an award-winning wine list, search no further than the well-appointed Library Bar. Wine Spectator recently honored their tasty wine list and the sommelier on duty can make expert recommendations. Sink into the overstuffed chairs and enjoy stunning mountain views and an intimate setting.

In the heart of the village, guests can take advantage of access to Club Solitude. The amenities include a large heated pool, hot tubs, saunas, a theater with nightly movies, a fireplace and billiards. Kids will love the game room with classic board games and video game consoles.

4. Little Dollie Waffles

5. Discover the Solitude Nordic Center

With over 20 kilometers of classic and skate skiing trails and 10 kilometers of snowshoeing paths, Solitude’s acclaimed Nordic Center provides even more action-packed activities for families and guests. The trails are groomed daily for Nordic skiing and offer a nice variety of gentle meadows, wide-open trails, or scenic detours wrapping into the woods.

Trails are accessible from both Solitude and the Nordic Center and a shuttle runs three times daily between both areas for the convenience of guests. Private and group lessons, workshops, clinics, and snowshoeing tours are all offered in addition to equipment rentals.

Start exploring Solitude’s peaceful winter wonderland with the Silver Lake Loop. This flat, groomed trail is perfect for first-timers and helps guests adjust to the high altitude. Keep your eyes peeled for resident moose and other wildlife viewing opportunities. For a little more difficulty, venture into the trees to find undulating terrain and loops of differing lengths. Skiers may choose to ski down and explore the lower elevation loops and can then grab the return shuttle to the Nordic Center or hoof it back up the 533 vertical feet to the Nordic Center.

To enjoy the breathtaking scenery at a slower pace, rent a pair of snowshoes and head for the woods or book a guided tour.
