OGDEN, UT - December 2016: Local photographer Doug Wewer will be exhibiting his collection of snowflake photographs at the Union Station Myra Powell Gallery in January and February. The exhibition opens January 6th and will showcase dozens of real snowflakes on colorful and black & white backgrounds, including painted wood and glass. Each snowflake image has been infused onto a metal plate using a process called dye sublimation. Doug has found this medium to be excellent for portraying the fine details of these incredibly complex snowflakes.
Like people, each snowflake has its own unique story. The path that a snowflake takes as it falls through the air determines its shape and form. Doug believes "snowflakes are among the most delicate and beautiful illustrations of God's creativity." Through the exhibition, Doug will try to interpret the stories behind the most unique snowflakes, and describe how some of the images were photographed.
Meet Doug during the First Friday Art Strolls on January 6th and February 3rd from 6-8pm. The exhibition is open daily Mon-Sat from 10am to 5pm through March 1st. Admission is free. Union Station is located on Historic 25th Street in downtown Ogden. Visit theunionstation.org for more information.
Doug’s work is represented by Gallery 25 and The Local Artisan Collective in Ogden; and the Artspace Gallery in Eden.
All of the snowflakes in his collection can be purchased at desertsnowphotography.com. Metal prints, archival paper prints, greeting cards and postcards are available. Matted prints start at $25 for a 5” x 5” size. The highest quality, largest snowflakes can be printed at 30” x 30” on metal and sell for $995.
Doug has been photographing snowflakes in Utah's Wasatch Range since 2009. As a ski patroller and avalanche professional, he has looked at countless snow crystals through a variety of lenses. When he realized that these tiny, delicate snowflakes could be captured by camera, a whole new adventure began. Now, when conditions are right, you will often find Doug outside in the cold with his headlamp and camera, trying to capture "just one more" snowflake. It has evolved into his own personal treasure hunt; one that he would like to share with you.
