Come Celebrate The Longest Day of the Year

I was handed the reigns of the Ski Utah Instagram account on the Summer Solstice while I tried to put together the perfect celebratation of the Longest Day of the Year: Biking at Deer Valley, floating the Weber River, and a sunset tour of Main Chute. Take a look.

The 2016–17 Utah ski season has finally come to an end. June 11th marked Closing Day at Snowbird, a season that saw the lifts spinning for skiers and boarders in eight different months. Utah resorts set a new record for annual skier days. And a few lucky die-hard skiers even got a chance to ski some June powder last week when an unseasonably cold storm decided to bless Snowbird with six inches or so of new snow. Needless to say, it’s been one hell of a season.

If you already find yourself missing ski season, I have a little good news for you. Today marks the Summer Solstice, the first day of summer, and the longest day of the year. Meaning that starting tomorrow, every day will shorter than the last, initiating the slow march towards the start of the 2017–18 ski season.

I plan on spending the longest day of the season the only way I know how: skiing… obviously. It’s a new tradition that started last season when a couple friends joined me for a Summer Solstice Shred Session in Alta’s Main Chute. Check out the video below.

Does the thought of trading flips flops for ski boots and hiking 2200 vertical feet make you cringe? I don’t blame you. Here are a few other Summer Solstice and weekend activities to check out instead.

What a week to be in Utah! I'm not sure how to to make it happen, but I'm planning on showing up for all of these events this weekend. That and skiing, of course. Currently sitting at 148 days on skis, I need just two more days to reach my completely excessive goal of skiing 150 days. I'll see you out there!
