Exclusive! An Interview with Kaya Turski

Wouldn't it be cool if an exceptional freeskier won the Best Female Action Sports Athlete ESPY Award? Kaya Turski collects gold medals - 3 consecutive Winter X Games, 6 at ESPN X games events total. That’s “best” in my book! You have until July 11th to click the link and vote (it’s super easy) - so get over there now. Or check out this interview and see just why you should become a major fan...and THEN go vote.

Kaya has been pushing the limits of the competitive circuit and making it look easy. Not only has she taken gold 3 (THREE!) consecutive times in slopestyle at the winter X games - she’s the first female to do so.

“It’s different every time,” she told me. Changing competition, competitors, and tricks make for “...an amazing experience, they’re all very unique.”

Kaya is also the first female athlete to do switch 1080 in competition. “I’ve always put pressure on myself, that’s how I’ve gotten to where I am today. I’m working with Red Bull performance crew learning new tricks, and getting comfortable with what I’ve already got.”

How does she do it? “Consistency is key. Getting everything really dialed in. It’s really about pushing the envelope and testing the limits.” There is no doubt that Kaya will continue to impress, inspire, and grow the female side of our winter sport.

In the summer, Kaya trains relentlessly. Her dry land training includes strength, cardio, biking, time on the trampoline, and water ramping. But like all of us during the summer, she’s looking forward to snow adventures again soon.

How would she spend a perfect winter day? “I really am a park rat. On a perfect day, it’s warm out, I hook up with 2-3 friends... I like to keep my crew pretty small. We go up around 11, goof round, play on rails, and then enjoy the deck in the sun.” Hopefully those fun days will be part of her training, although Kaya will be adding another first to her list - she’s headed to the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. It will be the Olympic debut of slopestyle skiing.

The 2012 ESPYS will air on television Wednesday, July 11, at 9 pm EST on ESPN
