January is Learn to Ski & Snowboard Month

By Mountain Mama Dec 16, 2014
Learning to ski or snowboard can be a little scary, especially for adults. I think starting the kids early is great because they don't have the fear factor. For those of you that have never tried, January is the perfect time. There are tons of deals and lessons to get you on your way.
January is Learn to Ski & Snowboard Month

This post is in reference to the 2014-15 ski season

We have all made a bucket list in our life and for some, "Learn to ski or snowboard" has been on there. Well, you're in luck! The month of January is Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month nationwide. It is a chance for you to get outdoors and learn the sport when deals are a plenty. It was started in 2009 as a way to get people outside and enjoying winter. Most all resorts offer great package deals that include a lesson, equipment rentals and a lift ticket. Here is a link to the deals offered in Utah. The deals are for first time only adult or youth skiers and snowboarders. It is a way to "try" it out to see if this sport is for you. The best way to lose your friends or make your spouse angry is to try to teach them to ski. My advice, don't do it! So many people try one time, get left on the mountain by a loved one and never go back.

Some deals to note:

Snowbasin has a deal that if you complete their Learn and Earn program of 5 lessons, you get a season pass for the rest of the year.

Canyons has a $45 deal that includes a lesson/beginning area lift ticket/rental equipment.

Alta allows up to 4 lessons with discounted prices and lift tickets.

Snowbird has a $45 deal that includes a lesson/rentals and lift ticket.

Park City has a $45 deal that includes a lesson/rentals and lift ticket.

Brighton has a $45 deal that includes a lesson/rentals and a lift ticket.

Most resorst have some sort of deal so you will want to contact the resort of your choice for their specific deal, and also plan ahead, reservations are a must!

Reasons to try the ski and snowboard program:

It is something you can do with the whole family.

It is great excercise.

Winters can be long, and it gives you a great sport outdoors.

It is a sport you can do into your 80's!

You've run out of excuses why you shouldn't do it, and the deals make it so easy to try.

On a weather note, the pattern is changing. The trough is starting to set up over the west which means storms will start to move in and out of the area.  Is there one giant storm? Not that I can see, however, I like to see consistent storms coming in every few days laying down nice snow.  Looks like Santa Claus will start to deliver!
