PARK CITY, UT (January 5, 2017) – For seven years running, locally owned Utah Del Taco restaurants and patrons have generously supported the National Ability Center’s mission to empower individuals of all abilities by building self-esteem, confidence and lifetime skills through sports, recreation and educational programs. For a set time period in October and November, customers are able to add a donation of any amount to their order, with proceeds going directly to National Ability Center programs. More than $31,862, a seven-year high, was raised this year, bringing the seven-year total to more than $205,000
“Our partnership with Del Taco has directly impacted the lives of thousands by helping us provide adaptive and therapeutic recreation opportunities to people of all abilities,” said Gail Loveland, National Ability Center’s executive director. “Each year, we provide more than 30,300 experiences for individuals and that is accomplished through the generosity and kindness of the individuals and companies who support us.”
The National Ability Center offers a vast array of seasonal and year-round programs, from alpine and Nordic skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing to horseback riding, indoor rock climbing, archery, cycling, kayaking and much more. With all programs, instruction is provided by professional, certified instructors and complemented by trained interns and volunteer assistants. More than 1,500 volunteers contribute over 29,300 hours annually. Many of the instructors and volunteers are also individuals with disabilities and serve as role models for the participants.
As a testament to the success of the National Ability Center, a new supporter of the National Ability Center thanks Del Taco for connecting he and his daughter with the organization. Scott Lawson found out about the National Ability Center one day when dining at Del Taco. He saw the promotion for the National Ability Center at the store and called to sign up his daughter for the program. He said skiing for his daughter Audrey would not be possible without the National Ability Center. Audrey will be taking lessons throughout the winter with Scott by her side.
As a global leader in adaptive sports and recreation, the National Ability Center’s programs have been proven to promote higher outcomes and achievements in individuals facing disabilities. Individuals of all ages and abilities can take part in the National Ability Center’s programs, and, to eliminate any feelings of isolation for individuals with disabilities, friends and family members are encouraged to engage in activities alongside participants.
“When first faced with the reality of a disability, many experience a loss of confidence, depression and lack of purpose in life,” said Loveland. “Our mission and goals center around building self-confidence and focusing on possibilities, rather than dwelling on what can no longer be done.”
