Powder Mountain has BIG plans to celebrate the big 5-0. Inviting loyal fans and diehard guests to join in the fun, Pow Mow will commemorate five decades of passion for powder snow in 2022.

From humble beginnings as a summer sheep camp, Powder Mountain has since claimed the title of North America’s most skiable terrain at over 8,464 acres. The vast amount of territory contained between Powder Mountain’s boundary ropes helps preserve the roots of the skiing experience and ensures there’s enough powder to go around. A visit to Powder Mountain is to experience the halcyon days of lift-assisted fun. Thanks to its sprawling acreage and low guest density, skiing or snowboarding at Powder Mountain elicits the sensation and vibe of the bygone days.

Powder Mountain sparkles in the sunshine high atop the Wasatch Mountain Range above Ogden Valley. Over 154 ski runs dot the resort and the glades, groomers, powder turns, shuttle laps, cat rides and night skiing ensures guests will never grow bored. By limiting their season pass and daily ticket sales, Powder Mountain strives to achieve a skier density of no higher than three acres per guest; one of the least crowded resorts around! In addition to good, old-fashioned turns, Pow Mow also offers shuttle-serviced terrain off Powder Country, in-bounds cat rides along Lightning Ridge and backcountry guided skiing tours and cat skiing.

The terrain that boarders and skiers of Pow Mow revere today was once summer range for the sheep of Frederick James Cobabe. The herd steadily grew between 1902 and 1948 and his son, Alvin F. Cobabe, eventually bought the company and 8,000 its acres around Eden, Utah. Alvin quit the ranching life at the age of 42 and enrolled in pre-med classes at Weber College with his eye on opening a medical practice, yet he retained the family property while steadily working on his degree. While horseback riding along Lightning Ridge with friends in the ‘50s, a chum casually mentioned what great terrain the area had for skiing...

The musing stuck with Dr. Cobabe and in the late ‘60s he constructed a tow rope on a small hill above what is now Wolf Creek Golf Course. The community loved the hill and Cobabe had lights installed to provide plenty of winter fun late into the short days. The popularity of the small tow surged and the sport of skiing was rapidly gaining momentum nationally. After a battle to secure financing for the risky venture, Cobabe opened Powder Mountain on February 19, 1972 with the unveiling of the Sundown Lift. The following year the family added the Main Lodge, the Sundown Lodge and the Timberline Lift. In 1975, the Hidden Lake lift was installed which doubled the size of young Pow Mow.

Powder opened a new and exciting chapter in the ‘80s thanks to the tireless work of local legend, Richard (Woody) Wood. In 1981, Woody fired up shuttle service for employees and those who ventured out into the untracked snow of Powder Country. As customers were frequently requesting rides, the Powder Country shuttle was born and the mountain continues to operate three busses and one van today. Snowboarders were welcomed at Powder Mountain with open arms for the 1984-1985 season and it was the first resort in Utah to permit the new-fangled sport.

Over the last three decades, Powder Mountain has steadily added to its collection of chairlifts and gradually expanded terrain to provide plenty of powder to local diehards and visitors alike. Purchased by the Summit Series co-founders in 2013, Powder Mountain now focuses on maintaining its uncrowded reputation by capping daily visitor numbers and continuing to offer many different ways to experience the resort’s limitless terrain and snow.
