This means for $3,400 you and all of your friends and family have a unique opportunity to ski every day at every resort in Utah.

The fully transferrable season pass from Ski Utah is good at Powder Mountain, Alta, Park City, Solitude, Deer Valley, Brighton, Snowbird, The Canyons, Beaver Mountain, Brian Head, Snowbasin, Sundance, and Wolf Mountain.

Normally, these sweet Gold Passes are snatched up by annual passholders but this season a few just became available. The Gold Pass gives you 40 days at each Utah Resort. “This is a special opportunity for procrastinators to get their hands on Utah’s most coveted ski pass,” said Ski Utah’s Jessica Kunzer. “Usually, the Gold Pass is not available this time of the year.”

The Ski Utah Silver Pass is valid for 30 days of skiing at each participating area in Utah for $2,300 but they’re sold out for 2008-09. E-mail Ski Utah at skiinfo@skiutah.com if you would like to be added to the waitlist for next year.

Movember, DC is stepping up for its second consecutive year of support with new contests and opportunities that raise money for men’s health awareness. Let’s face it; men just don’t get things checked out the way they should. Last year, 81 DC employees dubbed ‘Mo Bros’ raised $48,497 to change the way men think about, discuss and treat their own health issues. This year, the DC ‘Mo Bros’ are back, and now the participation has extended to include DC’s team riders, a new limited DC sandal, and contests with multiple prizes. DC will offer five separate opportunities to participate so everyone can get involved. Movember is the biggest international event supporting prostate cancer. DC is a Park City-based shoe company.

Movember challenges men (Mo Bros) to grow a Mo (Aussie slang for moustache) for just the month of November, as a symbol in support of fighting men’s health issues and celebrating the Mo. Movember has turned into a global movement since 2003. Mo Bros and Mo Sistas in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, and Spain joined their Aussie counterparts by participating in the campaign in 2007. Since Movember’s inception, almost 200,000 Mo Bros have sported a Mo and more than $29 million has been raised globally for prostate cancer research, including $740,568 raised in the United States last year.

Below are four options of how to get involved in Movember.

The DC Challenge: Win a trip to Park City and snowboard at the private DC MTN.LAB. Visit the Movember Web site to register a four-man team. The team who raises the most money wins an all expenses paid five-day trip to Park City, Utah, including airfares, lodging, meals, limo transportation to and from the airport, and a day of private snowboarding at DC’s private MTN.LAB. It’s a once in a lifetime trip valued at $14,000. Plus each winner will receive a snowboard gear set including board, boots, and outerwear (pants and jacket).

Bid in the Auction: eBay will host an online auction for Movember Nov. 1-30. A variety of items will be available for bid including DC products, autographed items from DC athletes, autographed music artist items, and more. One hundred percent of the proceeds raised from the auction will go to Movember.

Sponsor a DC Team Rider’s Mo: DC team members will document the growth of their Mo’s through photo and video updates. Log on to donate to the Prostate Cancer Foundation by sponsoring a DC rider’s Mo.

Send a photo of your Mo: Snap a photo of your moustache. DC’s Renee Renee’s latest character, Philip Bradley, will hand select the four most gorgeous Mo’s e-mailed to movembercontest@dcshoes.com to win the $250 DC shopping spree. Each Friday, DC will announce the winner, and post their Mo’s.

Sometimes you’re too close to the stage that you’ve got to take a step back to see the play develop. Such could be said of what’s been going on in Ogden over the past couple of years.

Many longtime residents of the Wasatch Front are entrenched in the mindset that Ogden is just that city up north, the last outpost before I-15 weaves its way into Idaho, the city with more train tracks than citizens. So when ski industry giants like Solomon and Atomic came to town along with younger companies like Nidecker, 4FRNT, Goode and others, many people shrugged and said, “so”. Others didn’t take notice.

But stepping back from the stage it seems that the move by Mayor Godfrey and his council is the talk of the ski industry.

Take for example the claim I read today on the Flylow blog that Ogden could be the next Jackson. Well, that might be a hard pill to swallow for many, but it also isn’t too far fetched to say that a few years from now Ogden may not be your fathers Ogden…unless your father was a ski bum.

Powder Mountain is on the brink of a huge transformation, Wolf Creek Utah is fast becoming a great place for families to vacation and Snowbasin might be the biggest secret in all of North America. Ogden a ski town? You’d better believe it.

Since I don’t live in Ogden and have only visited downtown Ogden twice in the past year (where I was surprised by the feeling of how alive it is), I’m interested in hearing your thoughts on if Odgen could truly become a skiers and snowboarders town.

A discounted room rate during Sundance Film Festival isn’t that exciting? Try this movie goers: If you book your stay at The Canyons for the second weekend of Sundance and you get:

You know, I have a routine, not that complicated, but not that simple either when I go skiing in the morning. I want to encourage some discussion here, so after I share mine, you need to leave a comment, write a blog post, send an email, rocks in the sand, someway, you need to share your story too.

Here is how it starts…
When I am leaving to go skiing in the morning, I pull all of my gear off of the floor heater that it has been sitting on since I went last time. The gear may have been there for one day, sometimes over a week. It gives my house that “I just went skiing” scent that all the ladies love. (Especially my wife.) All of that get tossed in the car and I head up to my favorite quick stop, the 7/11 on Bangerter near I-15.

Now, I have what many doctor describe as a “Rock Star Diet”. This includes drinking at least 150 oz. of Dr. Pepper a day, and following up with mostly fried foods. This diet is what makes me one of the best skiers/bloggers on this side of the Wasatch Front. You may look into this diet in training for the Wasatch Back, St. George Marathon, and the Olympics.

Follow up the Dr. Pepper with a couple Go-Go Taquitos, and I am set.

A little gas in the Ski Buggy, (btw, how many iterations of ski buggy license plates exist here in Utah? My neighbors have three, my cousins one, I see them on the freeway all the time… Blows my proverbial mind.) Gas was only $1.90 when I filled up the other day, some kind of a miracle. This can only really mean one thing too, more skiing.

With all of the gear in my Hybrid Escalade (Read: 93′ Subaru Impreza) It is up to the hills!

What is your routine?

I think that a lot of people are like me when I say that one of the best parts of the day is when you get to do a little R&R in the lodge at your favorite ski hill. You get some delicious food, and sometime with friends. Well, I like taking pictures of food, and have been for a long time now been including those pics right within the posts about the day. I think that they might need a little more distinction, so here we go…

Solitude Moonbeam Lodge

The Western Burger

At the Moonbeam lodge, you will find all kinds of resort foods, but for me today, the Western Burger jumped out as the clear choice for something special. With a couple onion rings, bacon, jalepeno cheese and tangy BBQ sauce, I was in heaven.

Carrot Cake

What better to follow up with, then a nice piece of Carrot Cake.

As a side note, Carrot Cake has always held a special place in my family heritage. My mom, basically stole my dad’s car in college (pre-dating) He had a sweet little Triumph TR-3. While the grand theft auto was taking place, she ripped the muffler off the car somehow… Rather the fixing the car, she did what any happy BYU coed would do, and made him a carrot cake… The rest is history.

So, Carrot Cake brings people together, and makes a day on the mountain excellent. At the Moonbeam Lodge, check out the Greek salad, the Chicken Caesar Wrap, (and salad). Lots of good eats at Solitude.

Well, look at this, November 14th, and another mountain to shred has opened up here in great state of Utah. Solitude, which was the first to open last year, and had a reputation to keep up this time around. As I was driving up the canyon this morning, I have to tell you. I had one of those perma-grins on my face. I was pumped that we have been so fortunate for the early snow this season. If y’all recall to last year, there was some early openings, then a huge draught in the snowfall. It took until early December before the snow really started falling.

So, what’s new at Solitude? Well, if high speeds lifts are your fancy, then you are in luck, there is a pair of them new this year, the Apex Express, and the Moonbeam Express. This, in my humble blogging opinion, is awesome. I love skiing at Solitude, my only complaint previously was the older lifts. This problem, now has been effectively eradicated. Getting to the top has never been easier.

Yes, most of the ski areas will be open by then (Deer Valley and Sundance are the exceptions) but the terrain is limited and bookings don’t yet reach half of what they’ll be over Christmas.

Still, that doesn’t mean you’ll be able to waltz into any old restaurant and be seated for Thanksgiving dinner. You might find yourself dining on giblets and gravy at a Salt Lake City Village Inn if you don’t plan extremely far ahead. FYI: some of these are last year’s prices, so expect to pay a few bucks more.

And opening day should be as sweet as arriving in the promised land after wandering in the desert for months. The ski area clocked up more than 40 inches of snow over the past week. The bounty will be accessed Brighton’s Explorer, Majestic, Crest Express and Snake Creek Express lifts beginning at 9:00 a.m. Lift tickets will cost $45 for a day pass and $38 for a half day.

In addition to hitting Brighton on opening day and changing your life (you’ll finally be skiing! word!), you can also help put a smile on someone else’s face. The resort is offering half price lift tickets to anyone who brings a non-perishable food donation for the Utah Food Bank. Bring some canned corn, ski for half price and slay powder.
Everyone gathers to celebrate action sports culture at the annual X-DANCE Action Sports Film Festival. Launched in 2001 and coinciding each year with the Sundance Film Festival, X-DANCE showcases the year’s top action sport films, followed by post-screening Q&A’s with filmmakers and athletes. This year’s festival is from Janurary 16-20, 2009.

X-DANCE also features open forum panels with athletes, filmmakers, industry figures and icons from the action sports world, plus special screenings, privately sponsored parties and a legendary Closing Party/Awards Ceremony. With roots in both the core industry as well as the mainstream, no other event on earth harnesses the creative energy of adrenaline culture and brings it together under one roof like the X-DANCE Action Sports Film Festival.

And the deadline is coming….. so get your movies in.

To achieve the desired contribution, the Lodge has appointed one of its luxurious junior suites as “The Giving Room”-where 10 percent of the total room revenue generated from the suite will be donated to the Huntsman Cancer Institute.

“Stein Eriksen Lodge feels strongly about giving back to the community and designating a ‘Giving Room’ is an exciting opportunity to help a truly worthwhile cause and organization,” said Russ Olsen, chief executive officer at Stein Eriksen Lodge. “The Lodge strives for excellence in providing guests exceptional service and the Huntsman Cancer Institute is dedicated to excellence in patient care.”

The Huntsman Cancer Hospital expansion will double inpatient capacity from 50 beds to 100 and will double existing imaging and radiation treatment facilities and operating rooms. It will house the new Blood and Bone Marrow Transplant and Myeloma Program and expanded Cancer Learning and Wellness Centers. It will also accommodate expanded clinical trials and enhance patient access to promising new treatments.

By the Lodge pledging a $50,000 contribution, the Huntsman Cancer Hospital will reserve a patient room in the new expansion as the Stein Eriksen Lodge room. The Lodge plans to incorporate decorative elements to reflect the Lodge’s alpine history.

“Expansion has long been part of our vision for Huntsman Cancer Institute,” said Jon M. Huntsman, Huntsman Cancer Institute’s founder and principal benefactor. “We have worked hard to donate or raise the funds necessary to proceed with this great project. Most of the cancer cases undertaken here are acute or more advanced than can be effectively treated at even the finest community hospitals. Patients are coming to the Institute from Utah, the country and the world with hopes that the specialized technology and the latest developments from our research and clinical trials will save their lives. Expansion is critical to our having ample treatment rooms and hospital beds that will allow their hopes to be fulfilled.”

In addition to proceeds raised from “The Giving Room,” Preferred Hotel Group, of which Stein Eriksen Lodge is a member, will contribute a donation to the Institute, and, every night that the “The Giving Room” is occupied from May 1 through Aug. 31, 2009, the Ueberroth Family Foundation will donate matching funds collected from “The Giving Room”. Starting this December, the Lodge will kick off an Employee Giving program, whereby employees may make payroll deductions to help the Lodge achieve the $50,000 donation goal and information regarding “The Giving Room” will be featured in all guest rooms so guests can choose to support the Lodge efforts and request the room for future stays. Additional ongoing promotions will also take place at Stein Eriksen Lodge throughout the upcoming year.

For more information on “The Giving Room” and Stein Eriksen Lodge, contact Sarah Myers at (435) 645-6451 or smyers@steinlodge.com.

For over 60 years, Catholic Community Services of Utah has empowered families and individuals of all races and religious backgrounds to realize their full potential by supplying the basic necessities of life–food, clothing and shelter.

Alta invites our community at large to bring new or gently used, clean winter coats of all sizes up to the ski area this coming Saturday, November 15 from 10 am- 4 pm, and Sunday, November 16 from noon- 4 pm.

Westminster ski team members will be in the Wildcat Ticket Office to accept the donations. The first 500 donating individuals* will be given a day of skiing at Alta, good any time during the 2008-09 season.

Plan to shop the ski sale scheduled the same weekend at the Alta Ski Shop and pick up your Alta season pass while you are helping the less fortunate.

*Ski passes issued to donors of clean coats in good or new condition only. Limit one-day pass per individual.

Well, perhaps I’d change “learned to ski” a bit but she’s not far from the truth. In fact, the skiing here in Utah is life changing and Alta is considered by many the epicenter of Utah powder skiing.

Well, another notch on the ski pole, Snowbird day 2 in the books. Started out the day on the tram, posting a few pics from my cell phone. After breaking in my legs to idea of skiing, (Sure, I could have done some pre-season training, but I thought that sitting at my computer trying to become the greatest blogger of all time took precedence), loosening up the boots a little, I settled into a bluebird day of skiing. I took my camera around and took some pictures of the day. Hope you like.

Here are some of the highlights from the article on smartertravel.com:

-The Canyons in Park City, Utah, are throwing in two adult lift tickets—and discounted tickets for the rest of the gang—per unit booked, for each day you stay. Consider that adult lift tickets cost $79 each this season. Kids six and under always ski free.

-At Powder Mountain in Utah, night lift passes are being rolled back to 2002 rates—just $15 for adults and $12 for kids. And night skiing starts at 3 p.m.!

Here are some of the tips shared on MSNBC:

-Book now

-Aim off-peak

-Go midweek

-Be a tourist

-Get free kids’ lift tickets

-Get free kids’ airfare

-Get your grade-schooler a passport (5th and 6th grade)

-Consult the deal watchdogs

-Save on equipment rental

-Follow the locals

This year’s opening marks the second earliest start to a season in the resort’s 38-year history.

“This storm and the subsequent lake effect have provided a timely blanket of snow in Little Cottonwood Canyon,” said Snowbird President Bob Bonar. “Skiing early season powder is a great way to kick off the season.”

Snowbird will be offering the Aerial Tram and two lifts, Gadzoom and Mid-Gad, to skiers and riders beginning Friday at 9 a.m. Expected open terrain includes Regulator Johnson from the top of Hidden Peak, as well as Big Emma and Bassackwards. Additional lifts and terrain will open as conditions permit. The Snowbird Center and Creekside Lodge will be offering multiple food, merchandise and equipment rental options throughout the weekend.

More than 3 feet of snow has fallen in November, and cold temperatures have allowed snow guns to operate, adding to the already impressive early season snow totals. Last year, Snowbird received 611 inches of The Greatest Snow on Earth® and had a 183-day season with skiing and riding from Nov. 30 to June 22.

Snowbird is offering an early season ticket price of $62 and chair passes will be honored to access the Tram until additional terrain opens. Early season lodging packages are currently available starting at $99/night through much of December.

One man wins, the other loses. But why live in the past when the present is SO much more enjoyable?

Following a lengthy and often heated presidential campaign, Obama and Mcain caught late night flights to meet up at Snowbird for a little R&R and to do as McCain vowed “we must move beyond it and work together to get our country moving again.”

He didn’t mention that the first step of moving beyond it was a little self indulgence in Utah’s world famous powder given that Snowbird received well over 18″ of snow!

Ski Utah photographer Chris Pearson fought off the paparazzi to get these exclusive photos. I think Obama’s form is a little better. You decide.

Who says Obama isn’t patriotic? Check out those red, white and blue gloves!

If you’re like a lot of snowriders these days you’re bound to a desk more than not and staring at a computer more than you’d like. If this is the case for you like it has been for me this past season, the stoke meter often reaches all time lows when the man has you under his thumb and it’s dumping outside.

I was over at the Life Elevated micro site killing time today watching the Greatest Snow on Earth videos for the 37th time this week and decided to download the desktop widget to check it out. Perhaps this will ease my pain during the winter, perhaps it’ll increase it.

Regardless, the download is simple and in my case I needed a new flash program which also loaded pretty fast for me. Now I’m staring at this guy (screen shot from my desktop) all day waiting for the numbers to fill in.

Once in a while he moves around, glancing at the report.

Now when it snows and I have the unfortunate situation of being tied to this computer I’ll watch this guy and the rolling report as I get stoked planning the attack for my next powder day.

—–

CONTEST

After downloading the widget, stare long and hard at this snowflake and come up with a name for him. Then enter it here as a comment.

On Friday, November 14 we’ll pick a winner who’ll get a pile of Ski Utah swag!

Yesterday in the valley it was raining cats and dogs - coming down hard. All I could think about was how much is it snowing up on the mountain.

When I awoke the Wasatch was white and Snowbird had received 10″ of snow at the top of Hidden Peak with an expectation that with the storm rolling in as I type another 1-2 feet will arrive.

This is today! The Snowbird SnowCam is BACK!!

What a great way to start off November. With temperatures dropping below freezing, Snowbird will have the snow guns running beginning this evening.

“Over the weekend, Snowbird ushered in winter with an impressive early season storm,” said Snowbird President Bob Bonar. “With more snow on the way this week, everyone is eagerly awaiting opening day and the start of another memorable year in Little Cottonwood.”

The 10 inches of weekend snowfall is the first recorded accumulation for the 2008-09 ski season.

If this storm keeps rolling in and more follow, a check of their early season lodging packages are might be in order as they start at $99/night.

A Note to Locals

The Tram will be open for scenic foot passenger rides from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 8-9. A foot passenger Tram ticket is $12. Lift tickets and season passes will be honored on the Tram but there will be no skiing or riding from the Tram.

Here are some of her tips for getting in the zone physically and mentally. Click on the link above for more tips.

The physical
1. Strengthen quads by cycling, doing squats and weight training.
2. Strengthen hamstrings with weight machines in the gym. This will counteract the quads and help avoid blowing out a knee when skiing.
3. Mountain bike downhill: This strengthens the legs and quads but also helps improve hand-eye coordination, reaction time and the need to look ahead that is required in skiing.

The mental
1. Breathing: Take three deep breaths with your eyes closed before every run. This will help you shift mentally.
2. Consciousness: Recognize when you are stressed, anxious or feel fear in the moment. By being aware of these emotions, a skier has won half the battle.
3. Practice: It takes mental practice to become a great skier. Attend a spiritual workshop or seminar, meditate about the sport, or write a journal about it.

Winter is just around the corner. Instead of looking at winter as a time to head indoors, parents shouldn’t let their fifth and sixth graders get stuck inside this winter when they could be skiing and snowboarding for FREE.

The Ski Utah Fifth Grade Passport and Sixth Grade SnowPass are the best ways for fifth and sixth graders to experience The Greatest Snow on Earth. Fifth graders can ski three times free at each of Utah’s 13 world-class resorts utilizing the Passport. Sixth graders can continue to enjoy one day of free snowriding at each Utah ski resort with the SnowPass.

DID YOU KNOW? Nearly 1 in 10 of the world’s school children are overweight and the number of overweight adolescents in the U.S. has tripled in the past two decades. Overweight conditions in children and adolescents are generally caused by lack of physical activity, unhealthy eating patterns or a combination of the two.

Don’t let your kids look like this during the winter:

Have them looking like this:

Check out www.skiutah.com to get the downloadable applications and the 411.
–

Each year 8,000 Utah students participate in the Ski Utah Passport and SnowPass programs thanks to support from KSL-TV, KSL News Radio, Zions Bank, Marriott Corp., Whole Foods, The Truth About Tobacco, Powerade, Ski’N'See, Canyon Sports, Rossignol and Burton.

This year’s festival will feature music by The Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash, Cavedoll and Junior Giant. Local ski and snowboard athletes including Julian Carr, Jamie Pierre, Rachael Burks, Jenn Berg, Stevie Bell and Ashley Battersby will also be on hand to sign autographs in the Powder Lounge.

New to the event this year, is the first ever Ski Boot Race. Contestants wearing alpine ski boots will tackle a challenging dash around the perimeter of the Gallivan Center in the quest for a new pair of Rossignol alpine ski boots, and the title of Utah’s “Fastest Ski Boot Racer” in both a men’s and women’s division. Pre-registration for the race will open on Nov. 1. More information can be found by visiting the website.

Participants can also take part in the vintage ski outfit contest and win new clothes from Eider, skis from Rossignol or a Burton snowboard. Lift tickets and other swag from Utah ski resorts will also be given away. The event will also offer ice skating, a kids zone, food, beer and much more. The Fat Flake Festival is free and open to the public. Last year’s festival was successful in conjuring an amazing 700 inches of snow for the 2007-08 winter season. Join Ski Utah as they call out to the snow gods and welcome winter back to the Wasatch!

The Fat Flake Festival is powered by Ski Utah, Ride Utah, KSL Radio, X-96, PowerAde, Monster Beverage Co., Salt Lake CVB, Stantec, Powder Magazine, Snowboarder Magazine, Media One, City Weekly, Pictureline, and Young Chevrolet.
