Best New Dining Spots for the 2014-2015 Ski Season

Downtown Salt Lake City

FINCA. NEW LOCATION  From its modern white and concrete space in Sugar House, Finca has moved downtown into a larger historic building and the interiors are pleasingly dark, sultry and boho-chic . Enjoy excellent tapas, paella and smashing cocktails in an environment reminiscent of a 1930s hotel, with plenty of leather banquets, velvet lounge areas and café tables. 11 a.m. – midnight.

 

AND…La Barba  Sharing the FINCA space is the new home of Charming Beard Coffee, roasters of single-batch beans and serving flavorful, simple coffee and espresso drinks. House-made pastries and churros with dipping sauces pack in the night crowd. 7 a.m. to midnight. Opens 8 a.m. Sunday.

 

Copper Common  My first post for Ski Utah was about Plum Alley, home of exquisite ramen and pork belly buns. And then it closed, not because it was bad, but to make room for Copper Common. Ryan and Colleen Lowder and team completely transformed the place in record time and opened this fancy little “vintage” bar that I wanted to hate, but that wasn’t possible. The Lowders’ golden touch (first used at Copper Onion, a successful restaurant next door and then Copper Kitchen—see below) has held true. Visit for après-ski oysters and perfect fries.  

 

Holladay/Cottonwood Heights

The new Holladay Village, located less than 10 minutes from the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon, is THE new place for restaurant openings. The development has brought greatly desired liveliness and awesome food to the neighborhood.

Copper Kitchen  The aforementioned Lowders newest venture touts a big, open space and souped-up comfort dishes. Consider breakfast poutine divorciados (two fried eggs separated by a column of chilaquiles ) with salsa verde, salsa roja, pork gravy, and a fried egg. Or, grilled pork chops with farro, beet greens and fennel apple bacon compote.

Taqueria 27  Gentrified street tacos, hand-shaken margaritas and giant bowls of guac sounds good to me after a day of pow. This is the second location; the first an always-crowded spot on Foothill Blvd near 1-80 and Parley’s Canyon, convenient if you’re skiing Park City.   

3Cups  Utah is in the midst of a coffee renaissance. Read more in my previous post, and here. 3Cups is a modern, grand space with views of Mt. Olympus. Stellar coffee preparation and execution, and wonderful pastries by Chef Amber Billingsley.

 

Provisions Ten minutes north of the Holladay Village is this new neighborhood American bistro by Chef/Owner Tyler Stokes. The bright orange and white interiors by Rachel Hodson are as fresh as the dishes, which feature organic, seasonal ingredients. I rarely say this—if ever—but it’s hard to decide what to order because everything looks good. And it all tastes good. Favorites: Hamachi, scallops, Korean bbq ribs, quail, mussels.

 

Bandit’s  For years I’ve been wondering when a restaurant would open near the Cottonwood Canyons that would compete with Porcupine Grill, one of my go-to après-ski spots for wings and chicken noodle soup. Well…this may not quite be that place BUT it’s got potential. This is a barbecue restaurant with panache and the interiors are gorgeous. The buffalo wings had a bit of smoke on ‘em, which was unique and they were delicious. The potato leek soup special was a cup of decadent cheesiness---perfect after getting in my first official powder freshies at Snowbird. I was happy to see local Koosharem trout, cheese and other ingredients on the menu, even though Bandit’s is a small chain founded in Thousand Oaks, CA.

 

Deer Valley

The Brass Tag  Located in The Lodges, about a block north of the Snow Park base, The Brass Tag is a great addition to the Deer Valley dining portfolio. It’s a cozy, welcoming spot to kick up your boots after a day on those lush groomers (or secret tree stashes). Fight over the duck and prosciutto flatbread or the homemade chips with chimichurri, gruyere and bacon. Get your own chocolate chip cookie baked in a little cast iron pan and topped with ice cream. Gluten free menu.

 

Ogden

The Barrelhouse  Travelers to Snow Basin, Powder Mountain and the new-again Nordic Valley need to stop at The Barrelhouse, a craft beer haven serving over 100 beers, each paired in the proper glass.

By now you’ve all heard the Vail Resorts has purchased Park City Mountain Resort. Nothing new on the dining front, but they have announced that there will be a new Snow Hut Restaurant, and upgrades to  Summit House and at Canyons, to Red Pine Lodge.
